  1. Anyone know where to purchase Ty yud 16X+R and -R media? I am looking to get some but so far it seems that Japan is the only place that has this media.

A lot of people have been looking, but no one has found 16X TY media in the US. It's not that big a deal, because the better 16x DVD burners will burn TY 8x at 12x. Let us know when you hear about some 16x TY for sale. Right now they are as elusive as DVD+R DL disks for a reasonable price.

  3. You could play around with some Verbatim from Supermediastore while you are waiting. If it is MCC it is close competition for TY.

Another option is to order some off Yahoo Japan Auctions by going thru a bidder like www.celga.com.

I saw Taiyo Yuden 16x at the PC Club brick and mortar, but they were like $2something a disk so I passed.

Listing on Meritline says saves 4.7 GB in six minutes.

    I can 4.7 GB in 6:45 with 8x TY's on my NEC 3250.

Would I really only save 45 seconds?

    I don't know what you're talking about.

I don't think they'd burn any faster that the 8x@16x on your ND-3520, but they should give better quality burns since they're rated for 16x. How quick 16x is depends on the burner's write strategy moreso than the media.

  8. Thanks for the info. I will get the Meritline Ty disks. I contacted Ty Yud directly but they wanted $2.50 a piece for the stuff. I'm not trying to burn faster just want to make sure it works with my drives.

I was very tempted to order a 50 pack from Meritline, but the cost of shipping bumped the bottom line from 60 cents each to almost 80 cents each.

16x media is naturally going to carry a bit of a premium over 8x, but I wonder why they didn't just price the discs higher and price shipping lower?

  11. I get my 3500 to burn at 12X with TYG02s with 2.18 firmware and they are great. Have you tried this with your 3520 yet? Also I have heard the TY +R are also able to burn at higher than rated.

    16x (CAV/ZCLV) = about 6-7 minutes

I use stock firmware and I usually burn at 12x's which takes about 6:45. I haven't tried aany hacked firmware thal always for faster speed.

  14. The difference between 12x and 16x is so minimal time-wise that I can't see much use in going out of my way to get 16x media. Some have reported as little as 20-30 seconds difference depending on the burner. Hardly worth bothering with in my opinion until 16x quality can be shown to be equally as good as 12x.

This is because the highest write speed is only achieved on the outer edge of the disc. A larger factor can be the write strategy used. I remember reading that the Plextor 712A could burn a disc faster at 12x than the Pioneer 108 at 16x. This was because the Plextor used a CAV write strategy for 12x, while the Pioneer drive used ZCLV for 16x.
