I bought a software package for video editing and DVD burining. I useit for editing and that works just fine. I go shoot some gootage on my Canon GL-1 and then bring it in to the program and edit and export as .m2v. Then, I open the DVD burning software that also came with the package, Impression, and I build the image, test the image on my hdd, and I go ahead and burn it. I burn at the lowest rate [1x] because I think that will be the most reliable.
I have tried a bunch of media, and everyone says to get the best. I looked around and I found that the Taiyo Yuden seem to be VERY compatible. Every time I burn, even with Taiyo, my DVDs play fine on some players, the audio skips on some players, and on others - everything is all jacked up [meaning video skipping/pausing, audio skipping, and jumping to the next chapter].
I have a Sony DRU-350A burner, running WinXP Pro, P4 2.0 Celeron, 256MB RAM, anything else you need to know?
I just want to know if any of you guys are actually making DVDs that are compatible with every player, or even like 95% - because I will pay you to make me some! I two projects that I have sitting here right now that could be finished and over, but they seem to magically work on only my player.
Seriously, I will pay you to make me some working DVDs, if anyone is interested, email me wood.jer@gmail.com . One project needs like 5-10 copies, and the other needs like 20. Thanks.

I'll do it
$125 for the first one, and $25 per copy after that, per project.Cheers, Jim

25$a copy? man you must be rolling in it. He can get them pressed for less

Too high. A quick search on google shows that your competitors are asking $3.79-$9.95 per disc for these small orders. The setup fees are about $50.
So, if anyone can compete with that, let me know. You can add in shipping to Utah, and I will make labels and cases.
OR, you guys can tell me what I'm doing wroong, and I'll do it myself.

when you create your dvd, check the settings of your project. Try to keep the overall bitrates (Video + Audio) to at/under ~7000kbps (total). Use Dolby Digital audio if possible.
Avoid putting on those sticky labels you mentioned.George -
So, I look at the bitrate when I export it from the editor, and make sure that the SUM of the bitrates for audio and video is around 7,000kbps.
The labels aren't good? When I play the DVDs with or without, they do the same thing. Thanks for your suggestions, guys.

What format are you capturing in? What aspect/resolution?
What encoding (if any) are you doing, in what encoder?
What editing, in what editor?
What type of audio? At what bitrate?
What authoring app?Cheers, Jim

What format are you capturing in? What aspect/resolution?
I hook up my gl-1 through firewire to my computer, boot up my editor, and capture it through the editor. It uses uncompressed .avi, I think. Normal NTSC fullscreen aspect and resolution.
What encoding (if any) are you doing, in what encoder?
When I encode, I go to export for DVD in my editor and it exports as .m2v. I can change the encoding settings there before I click export. I have just left them at default. They seem to be pretty good [low enough].
What editing, in what editor?
the suite I bought comes with Pinnacle Edition [now discontinued] as the editor, and Pinnacle Impression [also discontinued, I think] for the authoring software. I know it is old, but I don't want to do this kind of stuff anymore - I am good with a camera and editor, but bad at authoring. I just have too much going on in my life to keep worrying about this.
What type of audio? At what bitrate?
When it exports for DVD, it makes mpa files and wav files. I always use the stereo wav files for audio. As for the bitrate, I am not positive [again a default].
What authoring app?
I am using Impression 2.2 [latest version] to author my DVDs. It supposedly only supported DVD-R until I ran an update to support DVD+R. I am trying to use Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 4x media. It might be 8x, I bought it from a place that advertised it as 4x, when I couldn't find 4x anywhere else. --Could that be causing the problem? I don't think it would, but I don't know anything about this.
Jer
PS - I'm looking for the bitrates right now... -
Okay, to encode, this is what I do.
Export as mpeg-2 IPB stream
The IPB settings are:
Maximum: 6.000Mbit/s
GOP Size: 12
Audio is at 48000Hz
Anything else you need? -
BBS screwed up...sorry...now I can't remember what I was going to type.
Cheers, Jim

what type of audio is that? mpeg l2, dolby digital, or lpcm?
Is that a Constant or Variable bitrate of 6mbps (CBR or VBR)?
Do you have just one audio stream in your disc?
Using PowerDVD, you can right-click on the preview window, and "show info" -- this will put a little black box on the preview window with some basic information about the vide othat is being player. Make a note of the bitrates and audio type you see there...George -
You will never make a DVD that is compatible with all players unless you have it professionally authored and pressed. Even today, some players will not play some formats, or will play them in a half-arsed manner. Many are intolerant of burned disks and will play some and not others with little rhyme or reason. It is, unfortunately, a fact of life.
Buy quality (as you are), use a good authoring program and a good burner. Test your burns with DVD Info Pro and Nero Speed Test or equivilent, and accept that even with the best intentions, you won't get 100%Read my blog here.

The media used can also play a large role. Taiyo Yuden is good media, but it is not perfect. You might try buying a "sample pack" from a place like www.supermediastore.com (I think they sell them) or www.rima.com (I know they sell sample packs) and see if a different media works better.
Also, do not use sticky labels on DVD discs. They can cause playback problems (disc balance), peel, bubble, and should be avoided. A quick search here should turn up plenty of discussion. Some people say dog is mans best friend. I say that man is dog's best slave... At least that is what my dogs think. -
Such jumps and skips I have seen on NTSC discs without pulldown applied. Look at your settings for "3:2 pulldown at playback" or something like that (I don't know the apps you are using).
Your mpeg2 files should have 29,97 fps frame rate (with or without pulldown).
