These discs doing the rounds at the moment with 3 or 4 movies on one disc, I take it they are vcds or svcds rather than re-encoded to mpeg2 to make a dvd compliant disc.

The question is ARE they vcds onto dvd disc? Or are they a different format?

They can't be VCD on DVD disc. There's no such thing. VCD spec video is also DVD spec video, so they might be mpeg1 352*240/288 (NTSC/PAL) res mpeg1 (or even mpeg2, but that's up for debate IIRC). OTOH, it can also be 1/2 D1 res mpeg2 - some argue that they can do hi quality full D1 DVD video @ 1000-2000 kbps, which would give you 4-7 hours worth on a single layer DVD, even if I'm sceptic...

Yes, it's possible to get 4 mpeg-2 movies on one dvdr. Enocded at 1/4D1 (352x240), with a few tricks in tmpgenc. They're about SVCD (VHS) quality.

Yes, that's what I'm not sceptic about. It's the 4+ hours, full D1 claims that I find a little hard to swallow.
