  1. My brother has a Sony Vaio. I've helped him upgrade from Win ME to Win XP Pro. Ever since, the DVD drive doesn't recognize DVDs.

The drive is a Philips DVD-ROM DVD-116R; if I put a DVD in there, and try to open it, it prompts for me to put a CD in the drive. Normal CD-ROM discs work fine in the drive.

I'm guessing I need a DVD decoder that was somehow lost during the upgrade from ME to XP, but I've installed the trial versions of both PowerDVD and WinDVD and Windows still doesn't recognize that there's a DVD in the drive.

I'm wondering if I'm going down the right path at all, if I actually need a decoder and just haven't found the right one yet, or if it is something completely unrelated.

I had this same problem. I disconnected the cable from the back of the DVD unit. Turned on the computer. The dvd should not show. Then turn off the computer reconnect the cable and turn on the computer. The other
thing to do is download and install XP service patch 1. This should do it.
