  1. Does anyone have this type of player? I have tried Memorex 8x dvd-r as well as Maxell 8x dvd-r and they do not play well on this player. The DVD will recognize it but when the movie starts to play a few seconds later it will freeze/stop and then I get a "cannot play disc" error message or a C13:00:00.

The dvd-rs, however, work perfectly on my PS2 as well as the burner. So I’m thinking it’s a media compatibility issue with this player. Can someone please tell me the best media that will work with this particular DVD player? Would DVD+R media be more compatible with this type of DVD player?

My burner is an I/O Magic Internal 16X DVD±RW/±R (IDVD16DD) and I use DVD shrink to rip and Nero burning rom 6 to burn. I have also used DVDcryptor but that didn’t solve my problem.

Any suggestions will surely be appreciated.

As with most players, media types and speeds are pretty much hit and miss. You just need to experiment. You can check out other reviews of your player from the DVD Players in the LISTS section.

My player is a DVPS-525D, so it may be a close relative. So far I've had no problems getting the player to accept -R, +R, and +RW. I did have some read errors with the -R, but those were ultra cheap disks so it was probably just crap media.

It's possible that I was just lucky with my choice of brands.

  4. Thanks for the responses.

So what brands did you use? Maybe I should spend some money on sony brand DVD-R/+R? Thats a good brand right?

Since this is an old DVD player should I just buy and use 4X or slower DVD-R or +R discs? Are +R discs better in terms of being more compatible with DVD players especially older ones? Should I even bother testing more -R media with my old sony DVD player?

Well, be aware (if you aren't already) that there's a difference between brand name and manufacturer. A lot of media brands don't make their own disks, they buy them from someone else, and that "someone else" might change depending on who has the best deal that month. Obviously its who makes the media that's important from a compatibility and quality point of view.

I've so far mainly used Philips brand x4 +RW (actually made by Ricoh, according to DVD Identifier), and Memorex brand x4 +R (actually made by CMC Magnetics), both with zero errors so far on my Sony. The unbranded x2 -Rs I had errors with were made by Optodisc.

  6. ok i found the dvd-r that works great with this sony dvd player. They are Sony 8xDVD-R (SONY08D1....). I bought a pack of 50 at staples. So far so good... I have had no problems viewing the movies that are burned onto those discs...all good.

    thanks to all the replies...peace.
