ive seen a website where someone sells dvd recordings of videoclips from the 80´s and he wrote the folloowing:

you are permitted by law to make "backup" and/or "viewing" copies of material you legally own, as long as you retain ownership of the original sources. When you submit an order here at (something).Com, you will be asked to read and affirm a legal statement that you own analog copies of the videos in question and hence are entitled to own digital copies of those videos. What you are purchasing here is NOT the ownership of these videos, but rather my services in converting them to digital format.
    is this legal?[/quote]

    it is very questionable
I can't really imagine a situation in which you would already legally own "videoclips"...
are these television shows he's selling?
recording them off the TV/airwaves is not really legal ownership.

Its debatable. It mentions copies of material you legally own, hence theres no mention of copyright material. If the owner of the website is selling recordings of copyrighted material, then it certainly isn't legal.

Laws will vary by country but this couldn't be legal even in a country that does allow backups generally. BTW, few countries do.

Those countries that do allow backups generally, or those countries that make certain exceptions (ie: computer software and audio CDs) universally limit it to personal use, meaning you've got to make them yourself and use them non-commercially. If he is selling backups, or his services as he characterizes it, that is a commercial use no matter how you word it.

His reasoning is fundamentally flawed anyway. To suggest that ownership of an analogue copy of a movie entitles you to ownership of a separate digitized version implies that you in some way own the content. The whole point of a copyright is to allow an artist to publish something yet retain all ownership rights to the content.

    Ya know whats funny here....

If you go to that site he has this...

    # Type in the brand name of your DVD player in the field below and click the "Check Compatibility" button. A page will be displayed that lists various specific models of DVD players having the brand name you typed in. Make sure your specific model is included in that list. If your player is not listed, the DVD-Rs may not play in your player. IMPORTANT: since these results come from an independent 3rd party, they may or may not be accurate. If you have not personally tested playing a DVD-R yourself, you REALLY should use option 1, as there are no returns permitted.
And the search box is linked to HERE!!!!!!!!!!! VIDEOHELP'S DVD Players!!!

    for VHS:

    Encoding Type: NTSC MPEG2
    Resolution: 702x480 (full DVD resolution)
Bitrate: Variable Bitrate (VBR), Max 10000 kbps
    Audio: Dolby AC-3 Stereo
The standalone DVD player compatability brings you here.

Site is registered to some guy in Illinois..... He's probably going to get arrested now as I'm sure the powers that be monitor this site.
