  1. I'm trying to rip several DVD's that is not by default in TMPGEnc i.e 16:9 and 4:3.

The movies are 2.35:1 and 1.85:1. I have used DVTool to get the exact sizes for 2.45:1. DVTool says that 640x272 = 2.35:1. Though if i enter the sizes into TMPGEnc and run a small piece of the movie, it still does'nt come out right. The format is PAL also, don't know if it actually makes a difference.

What is the correct settings to use to rip a dvd in 2.35:1 mode correctly ?

  2. 1) get dvd2avi
    2) load vobs into it
    3) press f5 (a dialogue box next to it should appear)
    4) dvd2avi will tell u the source aspect ratio....(99% correct)

i've only had dvd2avi tell me incorrect aspect ratio for 2 movies so far....(carrie 2: the rage, and independence day)

  3. it's actually a good idea to completely remove the black bars from 2.35:1 widescreen(if not the rgb value in the black areas might not match), but you can treat them the same as 16:9 & probably not notice anything on your tv

    Stan,

How do you remove those black bars on the 2.35:1 ratio movies and still maintain the aspect ratio?

the black bars do not match those on my TV. Granted, I usually just knock down my tv's brightness a notch or two and they match and the movie looks great but if it's not that big of deal I'll try removing the bars and see how that works.

  5. i can think of a few ways to do it, but an easy way that avoids any math is to crop the black bars & letterbox to the original 720x480 dimensions then resize/letterbox(480x368) as you normally would for 16:9. this would be a breeze to accomplish in virtualdub
