Hard drives can crash & are more expensive per Gigabyte than DVDR. Use quality DVDR media & you'll be fine.

ok cheers but can a crash on a hard drive cause damage to the actual film??
-
What do you mean by 'the actual film?'
If your hard drive crashes & the data is unrecoverable, whatever you stored on it (movies, pictures, files, etc.) will go bye-bye.If God had intended us not to masturbate he would've made our arms shorter.

it would have to be a serious crash then, im always gettiung massive lock ups on here it doesnt seem to have affected anything.. I'm reluctant to store my stuff on DVD mate after the problems ive had with writers and media..it looks like ive finally found a decent brand media being Ritek with a G04 dye, im still not happy wwith my writer its writing media very badly with freezes and everything even though i am writing films at the slowest speeds now at DAO.
I find that CD's can get more easily damaged than hard drives can, What woud last longer though a hard drive or a CD?? you're right though it will be quite a nightmare keeping them on a HDD because ill have to do regular maintenance like defragging it and anti viruses etc therefore with a cd u can just put it in but there's still the worry if the burns..i did get a good writer being the 'Pioneer 107D' but i done a firmware upgrade on it and since then ive certainly noticed a difference in playback of movies.
I'm just after a good thing i can store movies on that arent going to get so easily corrupted on and will last for one hell of a long time.
I got one of those maxtors 160GB one and typically after buying it i heard all the bad things about it about it over heating too quickly etc which it does so i never use it!!
I want to save up for a 400GB Western Digital, Partition it to cut all data from the maxtor to that and fill it up with movies from the net really i dunno if thats a good idea or not!!
I know there will be a lot of things i will have to do to stop films freezing. I will need a decent codec pack. I will need to defrag once a month. The good thing about the pc im talking about is that it doiesnt have internet access which meansi m less likely to become infected with Viruses although some are imbedded with software so thats something i aught to be careful of and it will be a pain with the virus updates etc having to transfer them over network every 2 days or so to keep the computer virus free!!
CD's is much easier but if im gouing to back them up on DVD ill need a good writer that will last one hell of a long time and a good brand of media.. the best brand ive seen on the market is 'Taiyo Yuden' these discs are fecking expensive and im worried about paying 60 quid for 100 of them in case the writer starts messing them up.
What cpuld actually affect drives though as i said in a previous message on here i think Sectors can, fragments, viruses, codecs all over the place etc etc..but do you know of anything else that could happen to affact playback of a movie on a hard drive??
What damage to a films playback could a crash on a computer actually do aswell??
Cheers ppl!! -
Taiyo Yuden DVDRs cost a hell of a lot less per GB than Hard Drive space does, and they are more portable.

Ive just come across another problem now a film freezes on the cd that didnt freeze b4..i done a check on neros cd speed and yes it said it was damaged (The CD) it done a syrface scan this probably means all my cds are now damaged as they have all been kept in the same temperature..
Either this is common for those crappy silver topped cds from pc world 100 for 24 quid they were or the room temperature has completely f**ked them.. -
Good quality media will last.

hdd arent the best idea for the only copy. viruses, user error, hardware failure, etc etc. if it's really important keep it on the hdd and a dvd. like shocker said use good media or u might be sorry.
