Intervideo is still a fine program - but why pay for a program which no longer produces better results than DVD Shrink?
-
That test was a YEAR ago. Before deep analysis OR AEC was available. Of COURSE it came in dead last. Both DVD2One and Intervideo were better.
Nowadays, DVD2One is still decent - although the designers are ******** (oh wait, did I say ********? I meant FESTERING DISEASED ********) - and Intervideo is... well... it takes 10 times as long for poorer results.
Did I mention that Shrink is FREE? -
Actually, Intervideo DVD Copy 2 or 3 is considerably faster than DVD Shrink 3.2 if you select Deep Analysis and AEC on Shrink. Generally, a large DVD take's me about 40 minutes to backup to the harddrive with Intervideo 3 whereas it take's me over 2 hours to backup a DVD to the hard drive using Shrink 3.2 with Deep Analysis and AEC.
However, Shrink's feature set is much more comprehensive than that of IV3. The biggest drawback to IV3 is that when you remove audio tracks the program does not realize this for compression purposes. Being under the belief that Intervideo 3 produced better results for a time I was using both programs. I would remove unwanted audio tracks in Shrink then I would backup the disc to the hardrive (with no compression) and perform the transcoding and burning with IV3. However, this is also a lengthy process though it is still quicker than using Shrink on it's own with Deep Analysis and AEC.
I would suggest you give CloneDVD2 a try, the newest version produces a very good picture and its the fastest of the three programs. A large move take's about 30 minutes to backup to the harddrive. In addition, Clone DVD allows you to remove unwanted audio tracks and it considers the free space when determining the quality percentage. The only drawback to CloneDVD2 in terms of options is that you cannot do mixed compression like in Shrink where you can compress the extras more or less than the movie. However, in practice this is a very minor issue as it is generally not a good idea to compress small files to an even larger degree.
I still believe Shrink has it's uses. I have not done extensive enough tests to determine if it offers a benefit in the case of longer movies (3 hours). However, in tests of movies between 2 and 2 1/2 hours I could not discern a difference between these 3 programs from my normal viewing distance (10' from a 57" rear projection CRT). As such, I personally have stuck with CloneDVD2 for its speed and ease of use (easiest of the three and very versatile).
In addition, CloneDVD2 is the best (in my opinion) of the 3 for splitting discs to 2 DVDs, you can keep all the menus and extras in tact (unlike Shrink and IV3). In addition, you can select your own break point (though it has to be at a chapter stop). Shrink offers the ability to pick a break point that is not a chapter stop but using this option you cannot retain the menus and extras.
Anyway, excuse the long convoluted response, I hope I provided some useful information. -
It takes you 2 hours to shrink a video to your hard drive? Are you serious?
Step 1: DVD Decrypter ISO Read. Time taken? 15 minutes tops.
Step 2: DVD Shrink Open DVD Image and Scan. Time Taken? 2 minutes tops.
Step 3: Select stuff. 5 minutes tops.
Step 4: Hit go. Deep Analysis from DVD image takes perhaps 20 minutes, backup with AEC on Sharp or Smooth takes another 15-20. Total time maximum 40 minutes.
So we're looking at an hour maximum... lemme guess you're using DVD Shrink to rip? -
Gurm, are you aware that not everyone's computer is the same speed as YOURS? I could run Shrink on a Pentium II, of course it'd take forever in comparison to my current CPU.
P.S. - Nero's Recode is equal to or better than Shrink, and it is significantly faster than Shrink. Don't get me wrong, I use Shrink a TON, it's a near perfect program, I only wish Recode would adopt more of Shrink's layout and design (both programs are made by the same guy).
If you don't have Nero, you can buy a Nero OEM suite for about 5 bucks online. If you get OEM Suite '3' it'll come with Recode. -
I know that. What I'm saying is that I can't envision a system where Intervideo only takes 40 minutes, and produces the same results that Shrink produces in 2 hours.
And you're right - Recode IS faster. This tends to happen - the author releases a nice new Shrink with cool features, but then those features make their way into Recode and Recode is ... well, he's getting PAID for it so it's better. LOL. -
DVD-Rebuilder blows them all away, in terms of quality. Well worth the wait. (Mostly) free, too.

Gurm,
I was in fact ripping with Shrink. However, based on your last post I gave your method a try. I used HEAT (as it's a 3 hour movie). It took 28 mintues to rip to the harddrive with decrypter. Then it took an additional 90 minutes for Shrink 3.2 to backup using deep analysis and AEC (sharp). So even with this method it still took 2 hours. By comparison it took just 30 minutes with CloneDVD2 and 41 minutes with Intervideo DVD copy 3.
When shrink is doing deep analysis my speed rate as about 3,700 kb/s and when it's encoding its at about 2,000 kb/s. What is the speed like on your computer?
