firewall reports inbound connection via UDP protocol?

hi,

dont know much about networking...recently my firewall (Norton internet security) been reporting increase attempts of inbound connection to my PC via UDP protocol sometimes TCP protocol...what this means? is this coming from other pc? why its not detected as an Intrusion?
...I have Cox cable broadband connection , PC is directly connected to cable modem.

at a time the source IP address would be the same its just keep on changing ports to connect. Any help is appreciated...thanks

im not really sure on this, how would i know which port i am using? sorry for the dumb question, but i dont really have an idea on this area... are ports only used to connect to/from internet/Lan...

basically...port 80 is the usual to browse and what not...some other ports are used to transfer... depends on what u do. different programs use diferent ports so u kinda gotta pay attention to whats what. i really wouldnt worry to much... scanning different ports is most likely a program and not a person just sitting there. specially if it hit quick. just keep everything up to date and there are some websites that will do a scan of your security and give you the 411. do a google. most likely they are looking for something bigger than u

If you're not doing anything on your computer it's likely a malicious hacker or a trojan. Could be just port scanning like glockjs said, but could be more. It could be that someone's bouncing port scans off of your computer to test vulnerabilities in another network (making it look like your computer is doing the scanning, not theirs).

Go to http://www.whatismyip.com/ and write down or remember the IP. Then turn off your cable modem for a few minutes and then turn it back on. Go back to http://www.whatismyip.com/ and with any luck you'll have a different IP address. This will disrupt anyone trying to hack your computer or use it as a dummy to attack another network (if that's what is really happening).
