  1. Do you gain anything by encoding a file with a 352x240 resolution to VCD at 720x480? I would think you would be best to encode at the original resolution but I have heard that it is always better to encode at the higher res if your DVD player will play it....mine will. I always encode to XVCD at bitrate of 2000.

  2. No, that wouldn't improve anything. This would simply quadruple the number of pixels (and hence macroblocks) that would need to be encoded, yielding a net loss of quality.

    If you want to see the result, give it a try!

    It is a common suggestion to use a higher resolution if your player will support it, but this assumes you captured at a higher resolution so there's more detail in the source. Stretching a 352x240 file to 720x480 doesn't increase the detail, it just gives you more redundant pixels.

    But if you pump up the bit rate REALLY high to like 3500k/s it might look okay.
