I don't have one but I thought I'd pass this one on to those that do....

Sounds like a big bummer there

  2. The article doesn't say you can't skip the commercials. It said that there will be pop-ups during the fast forward.

  3. Doesn't Tivo have a way to instantly skip through a commercial, and if it does, the user woulld not notice this, right?

No, Tivo has to FF through the commercials - you still see them, but in ~8x speed. You are thinking of ReplayTV - automatic commercial skip is a standard feature on the older units.

    I think.....

Older Tivo's had a 30 second skip button.... Series 2 elimated this feature but the same result can be achived with a macro.

If I remember correctly some advertising lobby group ppl were not to happy about the 30 second skip feature and put pressure on Tivo to get rid of it...they were threatening to sue or get legislation passed to limit Tivo.

  7. Well I don't know what the big deal is, whether it's watching commercials at high speed or a real ad that's static in front of you. As long as FF still works, this shouldn't hurt tivo at all.

  8. The 30 second skip still work on the series 2 DirecTV units with a special code that you enter with the remote that activates it. You can find a list of all the codes at www.tivocommunity.com forum.

Thats why I will never own a TiVo. I love my PVR that's built in to my dish network receiver. It never records anything I don't ask it to, and it doesn't "suggest" programs that I might like. It just dutifully records what I ask, nothing more or less. And you don't go 8X during commercials, you press the skip ahead 30 seconds button for each commercial; three or four clicks and 2 seconds later, all the commercials are past.

What I'm not sure about is if dish network is tracking my viewing habits or not. Anyone else know if they do?

  10. I have nothing against Dish Network but for my needs it has to be DirecTV must have the Sunday Football Ticket. You can and I have turned off the part of Tivo that downloads and suggests what you might want to watch. And like I mentioned in my other post the Tivo does have the 30-second skip but you do have to activate it.

  11. I have a TiVo or DirecTiVo actually and it rocks! I had enabled the 30 second skip, but after a power loss never bothered with it again, it's just not that useful to me personally.
This unit also dutifully records what I ask, but I think the suggestion feature is awesome. I have found new shows that I never watched before due to this feature. My wife loves that it records Friends or CSI for her many nights even if she doesn't tell it to. As far as tracking your viewing, you can opt out if you want.

That sounds like an exact description of my TIVO. All those functions you mention can be enabled or disabled at will. And with 200 hours on the hard drive I can record everything at highest quality, perfect for bouncing to DVD.

  13. I prefer my Panasonic dvd recorder. Just push time slip, then up for the number of minutes you want to skip & enter.

Course, it also has a commercial skip button.

Some skeptics also worry that TiVo's planned use of Macrovision Corp.'s new copy-protection scheme signals more boundaries on what shows they can or cannot record -- even as TiVo prepares to unveil a new service later this year, called TiVoToGo, that will let users record shows onto DVDs or transfer them to computers.

Macrovision has developed a feature that will allow content providers -- the people who produce television shows -- to place restrictions on how long a digital video recorder such as TiVo can save certain kinds of programming. For instance, movies could disappear after seven days.

TiVo officials say the new restrictions will apply only to pay-per-view and video-on-demand programs. If Macrovision expands the feature to any other content, the deal is off, said Brodie Keast, executive vice president of service business at TiVo.

"We believe the consumer should be in control of entertainment -- either free over-the-air or paid broadcasts -- and this doesn't change that in any way," Keast said. "But reaching this kind of compromise allows us to innovate freely."

No it's not splitting hairs. If the commercials normally last 5 minutes, and you can skip through them in 30 seconds, I could care less if something pops up on the screen during the 30 seconds I'm fast forwarding. The pop ups won't be during the show you are wanting to watch. There is a difference.

  16. No problem. Will hack it also. We did it for Tivo. We did it for Replay We did it for DTV.

The only thing is when does the nightmare stop.

We should all boycott them for 6 months and see what they do about that. They always said the man that could build a better mousetrap would have people beat a path to his door.

Well, He did. The only thing was someone had to dispose of the mouse because it was not harmed. His other version was banned because it killed the mouse and the animal rights people got him stipped.

There are more crazys out there than you want to know about. They will fight over what type of thread you use in your underwear.
