Don't laugh at me for asking this, but if I record a disc on my Pioneer set top in VR mode (-RW), do some light editing and then copy it to a -R will it then be as compatible as a -R for playback in any DVD player?

If you're talking about drag-n-drop file copying from -RW to -R type discs, then the answer is NO. You will not have changed the "Video Application"-type, only the physical disc type.
Video Application types:
"DVD-Video" (compatible on all settops)
"DVD-VR" (compatible on a few settops/recorders)
"DVD+VR" (compatible on some settops, but not all)
Going from one type to another requires either re-muxing or re-authoring or re-encoding (or multiples of those 3).

Thanks, that is what I thought. Dangit. The frontiers of our mind are the last place we find, but maybe the first place we should look.
