I have been choosen by my family to capture an ancient videotape of my grandma dancing on vaudeville in the early 40s to vcd. The picture quality is terrible and it is, of course, in black and white. Has anyone worked with old home movies before? I want to try to make it as clean as possible. Suggestions for filters in VD or TMPGenc would be appreciated.

The first suggestion is to find the highest quality VCR to get every possable pixel from the tape.
After that I'd seriously consider going through, frame by frame, to clean up the worst of the scratches and dust.
Only after that is done would I use the automated filters.
Do all the work in uncompressed AVI so any digital artifacts are avoided.
