Traitor or misguided? John Walker... (reply requested)

President Bush described the American turncoat who fought for the Taliban as a "poor fellow" yesterday - but former U.S. military chiefs and war veterans want him tried for treason. As the fate of John Walker Lindh hung in the balance and debate raged, the president took pity, saying the 20 year-old Islamic convert may have been misled.

What should be John Walker's fate?

How can people or the President for that matter, have sympathy for this trained and committed participant? He is a terrorist and a traitor to this country. Send him before a military tribunal and charge him with treason. In my opinion he gave up his rights to a civil trial when he participated in the defense of the Taliban. No amount of reasoning can explain his motives or lack of could explain his involvement. If as President Bush puts it that John Walker is a misguided and a poor fellow, then the military should stop recruiting 17, 18, and 19 year olds for military duty. Our boys in Uniform didn’t quit and take their toys home when the War started. Claiming they joined for the college money. They stayed and defended.

Well let me say that I did not intend to offend anybody when I wrote an off-topic topic about what is happening in this world. Yes, I can understand your dislike about posting jokes, trivia and pyramid schemes, but the public interest is what this off-topic topic is all about.
I am outraged that this man is getting sympathy from our president… and he doesn’t deserve it.
I served IN Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and I live in NYC. I saw when the towers were on fire and when the buildings collapsed. And now I hear that this Traitor is being set aside as a confused and misguided individual. This sickens me. I am pretty sure other people are too. Hence the post.

I had the pleasure of sitting through a seminar with a university professor eager to point out just how misgided both the U.S. and Britain really are. Don't get me wrong I value my freedom but at what price. Did you all know that the U.S. and Britain via the CIA have funded numerous "coup d'etat" (overthrow of goverment by unconstitutional means).This has happened through out numerous third world countries. When Pol pot and his men turned back Cambodia's industrial clock to "year zero", Britain and America were happy to sit back and allow millions of innocent civilians to perish in the most appaling manner. What absolutely beggars belief though, is that folowing Chinas lead they were both happy to acknowledge the Khmer Rouge as the ruling party. There is story after story of blood being on our hands and we have the right to be judgemental about other countries?? How much of a toss does the goverment really give about its citizens. Remember the most important thing is for it to "look like it cares".Finally I suppose it comes as no suprise to anyone to note that the third world gives more money back to the West each year (in debt repayments) than it has and ever will receive.Ask yourself this when you read the words "terrorist" "fanatic" "moderate" "sympathiser" "war". Who really holds the power to define and to whom is the label attached??
p.s That's my deep and meaningful contribution to the day...

Why should he be called a "poor fellow" or a "misguided youth"? Was Timothy McVeigh a "poor fellow"? A "misguided youth"? Well, if he was, he's a dead misguided youth now and that's just what this John Walker needs to be; misguided or not, he needs to be-DEAD!
As Americans, we have a right to voice our own opinions and dissent from our government. What is not acceptable is to join the army of a foreign enemy and fight alongside said army against American soldiers. The issue is perfectly clear. He made a conscious decision 4 years ago by converting to Islam, changing his American name and going off to Afghanistan to be trained and participate in Bin Laden's al Qaeda network.
It's clear to me that he did not want to be a part of this great country. I'm sorry, but this is not an issue of "good boy gone bad. He wasn't arrested at a student rally against American policy, he was caught with an AK-47, fighting alongside scum who have no respect for human life, who enslave their woman, who torture and execute their own people for entertainment, and who openly rejoice the slaughter of thousands of Americans.
This turncoat is not (in the words of the President)"a poor fellow who was misguided". Who, was misguided by not friends to experiment with drugs or break a few traffic laws?
One question, Where the hell were his parents while all this was happening??? When questioned he clearly and unmistakably said that he "supported" the attacks on America. What other solution could you offer to a traitor who turned his back on a nation that would have offered him the opportunities not given in other parts of the world?
Let the Military have their Tribunal!
Would people be this sympathetic if the capture American Taliban warrior was a Black/African American (especially one of the many Black Muslims in America)?

This guy isn't even an American anymore. When you apply for a United States passport and sign your name you endorse a contract that among other things states that if you join another country's army or bear arms against the U.S.A. you have renounced your citizenship. Since this POS did this then he's no longer American and he should be turned over to the Northern Alliance to do with him what their laws call for. The United States should just stay out of it and not interfere.

When he was 16, he "embraced" islam, then when he was 18, he went to afghanistan.. there he met up with members of the taliban(aka camel fu#kers) and got a friendship going.. 6 months ago joined their group..

If he is "misguided"..he did it under his free will.

Currently we are living in canada and will be moving back home to kansas next year.
I want to know it is safe for my family to go places without worrying about terrorism.

If the US gov needs to "exterminate" thousands of "problems" I am all for it - IF it will make everyone feel safe again to go outdoors!
