  1. In All guides / Newbie articles / 10 DVDtips / [region code] by mrbass

The article indicates that you can change the region only 5 times [for a given drive]. I've heard this before and that the drive will have to be sent to the mfg. to be reset. That would indicate that the lockout is in the drives firmware. Is this true for any DVD Read/Writer especially when using only 1 DVD for both. Could this be the cause of many problems when reading and is there a fix?

what brand is your dvd burner? there are region free hacks for certain brands. check out this site to see if your dvd burner has a region free hack:

you would also need to use software for your operating system as well to make it region free. that way you won't get the windows popwindow telling you that you only have 4 changes left on your drive. you can use DVD REGION KILLER which is a free software compared to ANYDVD. use mirror 3 to download DVD REGION KILLER from here:

read this guide about making your drive region free:

  3. I would be using a NEC 3520. I would assume that this drive has a limited number of region changes. After reading the recomended sites. I think the use of a software program to defeat the region code, is the safest way. One site indicated that if a drive was locked to a different region, than that of a disk being used, The disk should be ripped to the hard drive than burned to a disk [region free]. How can this be done if the drive could not read the disk.
