My HP laptop takes PC2100 200pin SODIMM memory. Will PC2700 memory work on it too?

right now i have a stick of PC2100 -256mb and a stick of PC2100 128mb. So would adding a stick of PC2700 256mb along with the PC2100 256mb hurt anything? I guess the PC2700 will only run the speed of the PC2100, correct?

Also is there brands to avoid? Im looking for Crucial, PNY, Kingston, Samsung so far.

Stay away from PNY. Crucial is very good (made by Micron, I think)

I'd pull out all of the 2100 and bite the bullet and put in a single 512 2700.
Even though it won't run at 2700, it will have a better chance of running properly on your system. Laptop memory is a real crapshoot sometimes.

I wouldn't recommend the Crucial memory either, I've eaten 2GB (four 512MB sticks) of their ECC PC2100 in a matter of 4 months. Fortunately I did get my money back in the end but still spent a lot in shipping back for RMAs. Maybe their laptop stuff is better but I certainly won't buy from them again. I'd check here first and then look around for OCZ and Corsair stuff.

Eaten as in died, or as in not compatible?

Eaten, as in it worked for maybe 3-4 weeks, started throwing memory errors in its death throes, and then went out leaving only BIOS beeps for memory. I was running all Crucial at the time so no mismatches with memory brands (which I don't do if at all possible). Even the temporary Kingston stuff I put in there lasted longer than a couple months.

I have Crucial ECC in my PowerEdge as well as some standard DDR in a couple of my systems. It's never given me any problems but obviously results vary. It's rare that I hear anything bad about Crucial though.
