  1. I've been using Fuji, Sony, and Fry's generic brand, gotten pretty good results for the most part, but gotten several funky color artifacts recently on the Fuji, so what all do you think is the VERY BEST media to burn DVD's to? I'm runing the AO5, 4x, also, does burning at 2x possibly eliminate some artifacts and errors?
    Sound off boardlings!!!
My settop is a Sony player, btw.

Ritek all the way. The G04 discs are great for 4x burning, and are very reasonably priced from online retailers in bulk, going for about 81¢ a pop shipped in 100-packs from meritline.com here. I haven't encountered a player that couldn't play them (unlike a lot of other brands I've tried), and have had extremely low rates of medium sense key errors with Toast (bad media), and I've gone through hundreds upon hundreds of these things.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."

  3. taiyo yuden is the best. its kind of costly though.

i generally use ricoh & MCC.

another "this is best" media one

the best media is the one you find to be the best. we all have out favorites. Mine is TDK. Ritek would be the runner up.

Taiyo yuden is also really good, but as jeex pointed out, its a little more $

What you want to look for is media that uses Azo Dye. It enables the media to enjoy excellent recording quality and archival stability in the recording layer.

  7. if you are planning on selling discs (like doing a wedding and you want a nice prof. disk, I recommend Ritek or Memorex Printables) If you are just cataloging, I still like Ritek or Memorex, but not printables (they'er cheaper and you can get good deals in spindels Peace

  8. Taiyo Yuden.

  9. Okay, I'm going to give Ritek and Yuden a try, are they available at retail locations or only online in larger quantities?

Except I disagree that the worst media comes from Taiwan. Taking cost into account, the best comes from Taiwan. I've been through close to 100 Riteks and not had a coaster yet. Please visit:

Lordsmurf did rate g03s and g04s in the 85-95% range. Only the g01 and g02 were in the landfill range

What about the Plus disc? I finally have a burner that can handle +media and the closest store (BestBuy) always has tons of Memorex +Rs and is usually sold out of the -Rs. I might pick some up just for the 'ell of it.

  16. Ok, now everyone has gotten me paranoid about my disks- Does anyone know where to get some of the 1st rate disks off net (in 50 or 100 at a decent price?) Everyone raves about the Yuden and MCC disks- I found out the ones I get are Rytek 04 (in the second best rating). Now I am frustrated thinking I've been giving my clients the best, when I could possibly be getting better for the same price. Any suggestons? My norm for now has been 100 4X Rytek DVDr. for about (with shipping ect. 83 is dollars). If anyone knows better, Please enlighten me. Thanks- FCPguy

  17. Ritek above sorry

  18. Is there a site that deals w/media brands and their playability on any particular DVD players?

  19. Has anybody around here had particularly good or bad experiences with ProDisc?

Funny, you are looking for absolute best and when given quite extensive breakout by Lordsmurf including % of errors on the disc surface (quite significant I would say) you opt for one brand that is clearly marked as 2nd class

I hope that Lordsmurf's data is from reliable source...

No, reliability % are numbers of coasters per 100 (for 100%). Not errors per disc. You're sure to throw about 5-15 Ritek in the trash per 100-pack, on average.

Honestly, that number is growing on RITEK products.

OK, boils down to about the same unless someone is really picky about why they throw disks away (low reliability or surface errors). Personally I would always choose a disk with 20% surface errors over 20% lower disk reliability. Makes a big difference.

I must just be lucky. I've burned over 500 Ritek G04's and the only 5 coasters I had all came at once- caused by my Sony 500 biting the dust.

You need to wait some time to find out if they belong to the "self-finalizing" kind.

  25. Any recommendation of where is the best place to order DVDs online? I checked WiseWeasel's site suggestion and that site looks rather confusing

I order TY's from meritline.com. Everything else (mostly Ritek or Ridata) from newegg.com
