I will be adding a new burner soon. My superdrive is working fine, but has heavy use and may not last long. I may even upgrade before it dies.
1st Question - Am I better off going external or internal?
2nd Question - What is the best brand and model?

    I have a G4 Mac and I installed a Pioneer 106. Now I would use a P108.
I just replaced the original CD drive and outside of figuring out how to replace the drive, (There are tutorials) it was pretty simple. I use Toast and have no problems. You have to check to make sure the drive door works properly with your machine with some drives. Software will be no real problem, depending on your OS version.

EDIT: First part of your question. External drives are more complicated with Mac. I would use an internal drive as Mac has problems with recognizing and using external DVD drives. This is really an OS problem. You have to jump through a few hoops with the software with an external DVD drive. This is at least in my experience. Go internal, much easier.

no "best" brand, but Pioneer drives are the most compatible.

    go here,
    http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drivedb/search.drivedb.lasso
and search for brands like NEC and Pioneer for your type of unit, and read the reviews submitted.

nope. Let me tell you, go to newegg.com and get the DVR-108 link bring you right to the page. I got a referbished one as well and have not had a thing go wrong. You probably can get a new one for around the same price if you look around. Newegg use to have new ones, so not sure if they are just out or what.

this drive burns at 12x on most media and supports up to 4x dual layer burn. Its +/- supported and works instantly when you install it. A 3 second patch burn 3 run and its compatible with ALL iApps

best drive I ever bought! and [doh] its 20 dollars less than when i bought it!

Then you'll have to run Patchburn (free) to get the Mac to see it as a factory superdrive. It did the 108 upgrade on my old G-4. It was painless and has worked perfectly
