  1. ShiZZZoN-

Ok, the person who can successfully fix my problem will get anything they want(music n movie wise).

    Ok here is problem-
I have an STB TVPCI tv tuner card and a TNT2 32 mb video card

I just reformatted 4 days ago and installed the factory drivers for both of them.
Whenever i go to play a pc game like soul reavor 2, capture video or encode video or even when i paste a picture in an IM window, the whole computer freezes and i have to turn it off, then turn it back on

I have a gateway cpu running win98. I contacted them and they told me to go on their site and try each driver for my vid card. there are 2. I tried em both and still freezes. I then went to nvidia's site and got the newest driver which is WQHL certified and still froze.

I have tried all drivers for the tv tuner card as well and 2 different versions of the stb visual reality tv viewer program.

After doing all that, i alled gateway and told them that it still froze. They found out that i was using a res of 1600x1200 and told me that there have been issues with that card freezing up with that high of res when capturing or encoding and they told me to bring it down to 800x600. Knowing this is ultra small, i did it anyway. I tried it and STILL, it froze again when i attempted to capture video.

It doesnt do it as soon as i hit capture, It takes from 4 min- to bout when the movie is almsot done. Anywhere from that timeframe.
ANY HELP OR CONSIDERATIONS GREATLY APPRECIATED. YOU WILL BE REWARDED FROM SHIZZZON.

  2. The trick is to isolate the issue. Take off your computer cover (you are going to want to leave it off because this may take a while) and take out the TV capture card (having removed it from your Device driver menu) and removing the drivers using the add/remove prog. Then restart the computer WITHOUT the TV capture card in. Is it stable? Then, having downloaded the LATEST drivers with the latest version of directx, plug the card back into your computer and let win98 detect it (remove the inf file from windows/inf before hand so it doesn't automatically reinstall the old driver. Then tell it where you put the new driver and try that out. If that doesn't work I would ctrl-alt-del and stop everything from running but the programs you want to run and see if that helps...it may be a software issue. Finally, you may want to look into flashing your BIOS on your motherboard (amazing how many issues this clears up) depending on whether or not you are running a pentium or amd machine the latest 4 in 1 drivers can also make a huge difference. Also you may want to try using a different program for capturing (for example I have yet to get DVDx to function on my computer without crashing...so I don't use it) try VirtualDub, ShowShifter, or AVI_IO.....One of these will hopefully be your answer.

    Good luck,

    Mark

  3. Very quickly b4 you try that, if you have a VIA chipset make sure you download and install the latest 4in1 drivers.

  4. Hey SHIZZZON

I had the same problem with my Gateway Performance 800. The trick is to format the hard drive (I used a win95 floppy) and leave the PC off for a few minutes. This will rid your computer of any residual data set memory and clean the system fully.

Load the System Restoration CD and reinstall Windows 98… After the operating system is loaded, run the Restoration CD again and reinstall the device drivers MANUALLY, this is important because the Restoration CD installs basic drives for the device and not the manufactures software.

After that you should only load programs you intend to use… The more programs you install, the harder your hard drive works to capture video (I recently discovered that), then you should be on your way.

    Reply when everything is done.

it does sound like an irq problem, check all the irqs on your devices and see what is beeing shared, if the video or capture card are sharing with something else you could try reassigning them, or you could remove all cards but your video and capture and see if it still locks up.

  8. ok, there are 2 devices that are sharing the same IRQ-
The 3COM PCI adsl card and my Creative soundblaster live sound card. They are both on IRQ 10.

    Now-
well wait, theres more than that- check this out-
    Sound card- IRQ 10
3COM ADSL PCI Modem- IRQ 10
STB TVPCI OEM FM WDM Video capture- IRQ 9
STB TVPCI OEM FM WDM Audio Capture- IRQ 9
USB universal host controller- IRQ 9
    Ultra 66 controller- IRQ 5
    Com1- IRQ 4
    LPT1- IRQ 7
    Mouse- IRQ 12
    Keyboard- IRQ 1
PCI Bus master IDE controller(Hard drive controller)- IRQ 15
Secondary IDE controller [dual fifo]- IRQ 15
PS- I ONLY HAVE 1 HD
    Floppy disk- IRQ 6
    NVidia Rive TNT2- IRQ 11

  9. ok i reinstalled the factory video card and tv tuner card drivers again and still froze.

I am thinking it may be something screwed up with the divx codecs i got.
I installed divx 4.1 1st then divx 3.2 and then divx 4 again

I may have to reformat again but i hope it will fix it.
    Any help before i format?

One conflict that doesn't look good is the usb sharing the same interupt with you video capture, if you have anything on the usb, chances are it is being qued by the computer during capture.

  11. Well i have 3 things on usb but listen to this, tell me if this makes any sense-

I have a logitech vid cam, an I/Omega digital cam and an adaptoid(gamepad).
The vid cam NEVER freezes the cpu when capturing, only the tv tuner does

  12. I really would suggest you do the Via 4 in 1 and the BIOS flash before you do anything else. It is much less extreme that reformatting your system and it may clear up your conflicts. IF that doesn't work I would say it IS an IRQ conflict and I would try to remedy it in the BIOS (sometimes there is an option to choose what IRQ the USB is on...) THen, if all else fails, reformat.

  13. I've got great news!

I went in and tried to reinstall the vid drivers to factory settings but instead of saying yes when it asked me to keep new driver, i said no. I wanted everything to normal default. It's runnin fine so far.

Oh and by the way, if ANYONE has driver problems and wants to change driver versions, do NOT install drivers in the windows\inf folder. If you have an OEM manufactured cpu, get their drivers and screw the inf folder

Good point Sean, even if windows update says they have a new driver, DO NOT LOAD IT!. Go to the man site and get it from them! That is one nice thing about Windows XP, if a new driver messes up, you can roll back to the old one with one click!
