  1. my sony dru 710a does not recognize blank dvds. i hooked up a HP dvd writer and that won't read the blanks either (used space 0 bytes, free space 0 bytes). aslo the drives are indicated as dvd-rw in the my computer window. this changes to cd-drive once a blank dvd is loaded.

Do you have the latest updates for your burning software?

  3. I've got nero and all the updates plus updated firmware (even though the drive is fairly new to the market). should there be an option for blank dvd media under the autoplay tab in the drive properties?

Sorry guess I should have looked. I get the same thing if just pop a blank DVD in the drive. Won't even read it on the regular DVD player..... It should register correctly once you write to it.

Me too... If I put a blank DVD in my DVD Writer it registers as 0kb and a CD from windows explorer but once I write to it it registers correcly.

I had a similar issue when I first purchased my computer. They had sent a older version of Roxio that wasn't compatible with my newer burner. Are you using a older version of Nero?

  7. How are those drives posted in your bios? Does it even know they are there?

  9. I did update my firmware. I am currently downloading the most recent version of nero. In my BIOS the dvd-rw drive is displayed as:
SONY DVD-RW DRU710A. When I select this drive I get another screen that says: Type [auto]
    PIO [4]
    Ultra DMA [2]
for each bracketed option under PIO and Ultra DMA the other options are numbers. Under Type the options are:
    Auto
    None
    User type HDD
    CD-ROM
    LS 120
    ZIP 100
    MO
    OTHER ATAPI DEVICE
does this seem right? should I change the Type option for my dvd-rw under the BIOS?
