    Hello,

    So does your state/province have a bottle deposit for pop/soda/beer cans and bottles????? (for recycling purposes).

    Michigan has a 10 cent bottle deposit. I think its the highest in the country.

    What's yours?? (if any).

    New York has 5 cents I think.

    Reminds me of that Seinfeld episode.

    Hello,

    Yeah - the RETURN portion Northcat :P

    I knew Ohio didn't have one. My sister and brother in law live in Cleveland. It's weird when they throw em out instead of taking them back to the store...

    Wierd as it may be...but we can still drive thru a garage and buy beer from our car. That's one more reason to buy a truck, you can strap the cooler right underneath the sliding rear window, that way you don't have to stop and get out to get another beer if you are driving a long distance

    I throw mine away.There shouldnt be any deposit on bottles because it costs just as much to recycle them as make new ones.Plus sand is a renewable resource.

    I believe it is mandetory in all provinces (someone correct me if they know a province that doesn't).

    In Alberta I believe all drink containers have a deposit - everything from juice boxes to wine bottles. The only thing that I can think of that doesn't have a deposit is milk containers (and I don't know why they don't).

  12. We have bottle banks, usually in supermarket carparks. Don't get any cash for them though.

    yup the state of hawaii started a bottle deposit at the beginning of this year.....it hit a snag because the recyling centers have long lines.....

  16. SquirrelDip, all provinces do. Mandated by federal law.
    Milk cartons/jugs are not, because they're made from a slightly different plastic compound, and this makes them next to impossible to sterilize, as well as the flash point of the plastic is too close to it's melting point, which means they usually go up in smoke right about when they're supposed to melt.
    If they started selling milk in the same sort of plastic as soda, then (by law) there would be a deposit required, and thus make them returnable/recyclable.
    The lobbyists for the dairy industry convinced the feds that milk is a necessity, so no tax, no deposit, no return

    @reboot - thanx.

    I grew up in BC (Vancouver area) and the way it worked back then was if a store sold it they had to take the empties back. There were bottle depots but generally you just took your empties back to where you bought them from.

    I moved to Toronto right after graduating university and figured the same procedures applied there - was buying a 24 flat of pop and had 24 empties, the cashier looked puzzled and asked if I drank the whole flat while doing my grocery shopping... Felt kinda stoopid...

  21. Dr Gee...If it has the recycle symbol on the lable, or embedded in the plastic, it is. Evian et al included. Juice boxes (all sizes), all carbonated and non-carbonated beverages in plastic or cardboard containers. Even the "gala keg" wine in a box is recycleable afaik. All aluminum cans...etc...
    A week around our house is good for about $5 worth.

    Louisiana has no recycling deposit.
    There was a company in Chalmette that would give a few cents for aluminum cans, but they're gone.
    Now you put everything in a bin.

    Yeah, they just raised the deposit amount here in CA not long ago.

    Cans & Bottles under 24oz = $.04

    Over 24oz = $.08

    Helps keep bums in Ripple...

    Hard to find recycle places here, though. They're more than happy to charge you when you buy soda, but when you want to recycle, the few places around are always closed, or their "bin are full".

    Kinda pisses you off when you drag piles of bottles down there and find out they can't accept them because they don't have room for them.

    Typical of CA, to force you to pay the deposit but make it next to impossible to return...

    I always thought it'd pay to collect cans in Vegas (no deposit there, and they have the necessary CRV - Calif Redemption Value - on all of them, even in Vegas). Just go to casinos and bring a truck, load up and drive to Barstow, nearest city in CA that has a recycle center. Make 100's of $$ and return to Vegas for more. I actually collected them in Vegas once, my neighbor had tons of them, brought them here and got enough money to pay my gas roundtrip and food. Not bad, for free...

  24. In Australia only one state has the deposit system, South Australia. Don't know how it works but it says its a 5 cent refund so one of these days I might do a Seinfeld and get a truckload.

  25. MO= At one time, but quit
    MI=Yes
    IN=No
    TX=No

    I remember when I lived in Grand Rapids, MI and did the deposit thing. It was weird for someone who had never done it. Whats worse, the state I moved from, MO, had recycling where you were recquired to rip off the plastic for recylcing the bottle. Got to MI and learned about the deposit and when we went to Menard's to do it (there is a separate room which has a number of different machines to get credit at Menards for the deposit), none of the bottles worked. Thankfully one of the attendants gave us credit since we were from another state.

    I believe that it is done to "force" people to not litter. I personally dont think that it accomplished that, but could be wrong. I also remember the "S" curve that got redone in 2000-2001. They put (essentially) bear spigots on the road to prevent ice buildup on it. I just imagined drunks out on the road trying to get a sip.

    Mexico has something like this. It was wierd the first time I saw it though. You go to the store and ask for a Coke (or a Pepsi) and they ask if you want the bottle. If yes, its an extra peso (~$0.10). You can then later on bring the bottle back and you can buy another Coke (or Pepsi) for the regular price (2 pesos (~$0.20)). Never tried to see if you can actually get money back for the bottle only, though.

    There's not deposit here in MN but I'm learning about them because my cabin is in MI. After the house-warming party up there where 5 of my friends and I went through 4 cases of beer I had to make sure we were keeping all the bottles together. I have mixed feelings about the deposits. I think it must help keep that garbage off the road, especially drinking parties and the like. However my biggest gripe is having to truck that garbage back out to a recycle place and stand there processing all your bottles/cans. It's the time spent more than anything that I don't like and at some point it's not going to be worth the ten cents per item. Those machines sometimes don't even take it even though it was bought in MI!

    What would be nice is to have a recycle truck come around and do that for you and just mail you a bill for their service minus the deposit gained. If you happen to go through a lot of bottles/cans then there would be a check in the mail.
