A 54-year-old British man broke his leg after falling 3m while walking above a nudist beach.

The man was walking along a path on a cliff above Congwong Beach – a nudist beach in La Perouse, in Sydney's south-east – when he fell.

A Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter spokesman said it was unclear how or why the man fell.

"We're not sure at this stage, and if it was (because of the nudist beach), he's not going to admit it," the spokesman said.

The man was airlifted to St George Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Reminds me of Black's Beach in San Diego (La Jolla area, actually) back around 1977 or so. Full legal nude beach, and when you looked up from the beach (yes, I was there) to the top of the steep cliff, you could see guys with binoculars, cameras and telescopes looking down at the naked crowd below. I always wondered if any of them ever fell while looking. I remember seeing a small car about 1/3 of the way down the cliff that had gone over the side, and I suspect the reason why

Eventually the car was somehow removed.

I was there in July of '77, and coming from FL, it was quite a shock to see all these naked people just parading around - young, old, black, white, mothers, fathers, familes -everyone.

Sometime later, after a couple more years, they outlawed nudity on that beach, though it continued for a long time afterwards - the police just didn't enforce the ban. I have no idea if it still goes on today, I'm afraid to go there...

There were guys on the beach itself with cameras, and even KTTV, Channel 11 here in L.A. walked down the beach and showed some nudity. It was on a late-night news spoof program they did back then called "Metronews, Metronews" (title take-off on "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman", which was on just before this program).

No one complained about the cameras, apparently, and I don't know how they got away with showing nudity on broadcast TV. That wasn't the only time they had nudity on that program. I remember seeing a 'report' about hot tubs, where the 'reporter' got into the tub with some nice babes, all topless. You could see everything fairly clearly, and they repeated the program more than once. Guess the FCC didn't find out about it, or if they did, I never heard. Eventually the program was cancelled, but I remember it well. Wonder if anyone else remembers it?

  9. Pics? Sure. Here is a video cam of Blacks Beach. Its actually a surf cam. You can click on the image two times to enlarge it. Some people actually fell from that cliff....

No, you won't see any nude people & I have only seen about 2 surfers there in 2 years. Dunno why that is, it was packed in the 70s with surfers when I went to UCSD:

Lucky guy. Assuming he was looking at a lot of naked females, and assuming he had the natural reaction to doing so, there are worse things he could have broken.

Any idea when the nudists disappeared from there? If you were at UCSD back then, you probably saw it first hand :P

That beach was absolutely packed with naked people in '77. So much so, that it was hard to find a place to sit down on weekends (well, a good place where you could see, anyway). I never went back after the a couple of times there in July and August of that year. I remember seeing a small sign in the sand on the beach that said "Swimsuit optional, area north of this sign. SD city ordinance # ****". All the people on the north side were nude, all the people south of it were wearing their suits. Kind of a strange sight.

I'm not sure exactly, but I think they voted to turn it back into a 'regular' beach a year or two after I was there. Too bad.

  13. I haven't noticed people on the beach on the web cam.

This could be for a few reasons, number one, beach is closed during the winter because of those cliffs.

    Next: too Cold.

BTW, that webcam shows 'Gay Man's Bluff' on the bottom

If you really want to know why the beach isn't full just call the cops they have at UCSD. Im sure they know as they have full access to the beach. They told me in the 70s they would drive me to the beach & back if I wanted to

IIRC, the gay end of the beach was on the north end, and because of where I had parked, I had to walk through it to get to the south end where all the regular people were. Glad I waited to go 'au naturel' until I got to the south end...

Found a website that seems to suggest that it was still a nude beach as recently as a couple of years ago:

    Description:

Black's Beach is topped by 300-foot high sandstone cliffs

Two miles long and as wide as 60 feet

There have been some reports of sex on the sand

Hang gliders and remote control airplanes nearby

(remote control airplanes + sex = dangerous mix )

Paul says Black's is "Very clean and at low tide, it is very wide. High tide can consume nearly all of it if it is an especially high, high tide. Sand is fine and is a mixture of black and white sand."

In July, 2002, Brad reported "Black's Beach nudity is freely practiced south of the city line."
