ORANGE — An Orange middle school teacher has been charged with 20 counts of lewd acts for allegedly molesting and having sex with two of her students when they were 12-14 years old, prosecutors said.

A teary-eyed Sarah Suzanne Bench-Salorio, 28, of Orange, appeared in court in a blue jail jumpsuit, but her arraignment was postponed until Jan. 14.

She is being held on $1 million bail.

Bench-Salorio is accused of lewd acts with one of the boys between May and September 2003, and the other boy between September and December of last year.

Bench-Salorio, who taught reading and English for two years at Santiago Charter Middle School, was arrested Tuesday, a day after one of the boys told his parents about the alleged contact with his former teacher, police said.

District Attorney Anthony Rackauckas told reporters that the boys "were seduced by Bench-Salorio over dinner, through e-mails and phone calls for several months before any molestation started."

"These were students of hers that she befriended and romanced over a period of time, and then seduced," he said.

"Miss Bench-Salorio was entrusted with teaching these boys reading and writing and instead these victims had to learn lessons that they should not have had to learn from this teacher," Rackauckas said.

"To my knowledge they didn't take place on campus, (but) at least (at) a couple of different locations," he said. "One (was) in a residence, not at her residence (but) I understand it was at the boy's residence."

"I don't know what the relations of the boys were to each other," Rackauckas said.

"Once the police started the investigation, then they learned of the second victim and I'm not sure exactly how that occurred," he said.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the teacher and her husband, Christopher Salorio, 30, an electrical foreman, are raising his three siblings -- ages 5, 10 and 14 -- as foster children.

The children, two girls and a boy, were removed from the home yesterday, Deputy District Attorney John Christl said.

The allegations against Bench-Salorio include sexual intercourse, Christl said.

She was at Santiago for two years and also worked as a student teacher at Panorama Elementary School in Orange in 2002. Police are looking into whether there are more victims, Christl said.

The teacher unsuccessfully ran for a seat on the Orange Unified School District Board of Trustees, according to published reports.

"We don't have any reason to believe that her husband had anything to do with it," Rackauckas said.

Defense attorney Alan Stokke declined to comment specifically on the charges outside the courtroom, but said his client cried during her court appearance because "it's very emotional being accused of a serious crime."

"She's very embarrassed," Stokke said.

Rackauckas told reporters that molesters are mostly men but that "the law applies the same way to men and women."

"I don't think that we would say it's less of a crime because it was a woman teacher and male student," Rackauckas said. "It's the same crime." Rackauckas said Bench-Salorio faces up to 46 years in prison if convicted of all charges.

"We're also fairly confident that there are additional victims out there," he said. "For any of those additional victims who are out there and haven't come forward, we want them to know that they should be able to tell their parents that this teacher did something with them that was inappropriate and we want those boys to know that their parents love them and will do the best for them."

Orange Unified School District Superintendent Robert French said Bench- Salorio has been placed on administrative leave, and the district is cooperating in the investigation.

"This is a personnel matter, and on that basis the district can give no additional information. However, the primary concern of the district is always the safety and welfare of its students," French said.

Under provisions of the California Penal Code, police notified the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing of Bench-Salorio's arrest. Anyone with information about the case was asked to call the Orange Police Department at (714) 744-7444.

For the record i would be happy if it were me.. also i have a 16yo girl and a 15 yo boy.. if a teacher came on to my daughter i would go off the hook.. if a female teacher came on to my son.. well i would look at it differently.. i would still be a bit upset.. but i would see if he was ok with it and make sure it wasnt totally crazy.. BUT i would still be upset lol.. just in different ways.. so im guilty too.. its just to bad that its that way.. 14yo boy Yeaaaaa.. 14yo girl.. Booooo

Here's what I'm thinkin... Boys and girls are different. I know the PC crowd keeps trying to tell us different but it's true. They are and I'm glad.

I agree. My kids are boy 17, girl 14. If a male teacher tried something with my daughter...let's just say it wouldn't be positive and I'm sure his rights will be violated. My son on the other hand, well...that's kind of on him, he'll be 18 this spring so what can I really say about it?

I have to wonder if how upset you would be over it is proportionate to how hot the teacher who came on to your son was...and if she was hot...would it be jealousy?
