  1. I have a Panasonic E85 recorder. When I put In 8 X media and try to record from the hard drive it stops after like a min automatically. This only happens with 8X media when I use 4 X media it's fine. Why is it not accepting the 8X media? Now I can't find 4x name branded media as its being discontinued. Best Buy only have Fuji TY 8x media. Even the Maxell's are 8x TY media code. Is there a firmware updat to correct this problem?

  2. Don't waste your money on 8X media, you're only burning at 1X anyway.

I though E85s had a 4X burner in them? The E80 (previous year model) has a 1X burner. I know...I've got one. Pannasonic doesn't upgrade their firmware so you probably won't be able to burn 8X discs without running into problems. I'm currently using MSonic 1X - 4X discs in my E80 with good results. At about 60 cents per disc they are good enough for non - archival stuff. I get mine from Staples Canada. Since I'm not filling the discs to capacity and burning at slow speeds, I seem to have few problems even with the cheap discs these days...

OK, but at what speed are they burning? It sounds like the E85 burns at 4X so I suppose you're getting 4X.

They are burning at 4X, I under stood Shawn757 to say that his unit would not burn TY 8X at all.

By the way Shawn757 is that a Boeing in your handle. I flew them too.

  9. Yep, that's what I understood too. With media being so reasonably priced these days, it only makes sense to get top quality stuff like the TYs. When I use up my stash of Japanese Maxells I'm jumping on the TY bandwagon.

For my E80H, I have been using Prodisc S03 when I can find them. Currently I'm using Taiwanese 4X MCC at 60 cents per disc. The Japanese Maxells run about $1.50 and I'm using them for my own stuff. The MCCs I use for other people's throw-away recordings (TV show episodes mostly). I can't get TY in town at all. The internet sellers in Canada are okay but I lose out because of shipping. Getting from the USA means I have to pay multiple taxes, duty, exchange and shipping costs. Mostly I wait for things to go on sale and buy what has worked for me in the past...

I have had very good luck with my limited burns (about 5 since I purchased it last week, with no coasters at all) using high speed dubbing with Taiyo Yuden (8x code TYG02) media from rima.com. I had one selection that indicated that it would have to be burned at 1x, probably due to the number of edits from chopping out commercials. Everything else went through fine. I am also curious about whether Panasonic releases firmware updates for the DMR series recorders, as my recorder is not completely glitch-free (TV Guide Program guide seems to be a lamer).

    Regards,

    Ender
