My Back to the Future Project Revisited

Hello Again,
I have taken up again my Back to the Future project in the hopes of getting it to a 9 or 9.4gb dvd

What I am doing is splicing the movies so that they run as a single seamless 5 1/2 hour beauty. I am running into a couple issues, however.

At first I knew I had to get each movie down to a little over 3gb so with DVD shrink I shrunk them to roughly 60%, keeping only the main title and the DD5.1 soundtrack. It made the necessary VOB files and I then loaded it into Womble MPEG Video Editor and cut away the excess at the end right at the frame where I would begin the second movie. Here is where problem #1 came in. When I did a stream copy back to a mpg file the movie hiccups at the places where the vob files meet, very uncool.

So I went back and told DVD shrink to save not break it up into 1gb chunks. Shrunk the movie again and got a 3.07gb file. Went into Womble and trimmed the end off. Stream copy to mpeg. No Problems. On to the second movie. This one needs some trimming at the beginning AND the end. so I did the same process and trimmed it in womble. then when I stream copied this time the audio/video was ever so slightly out of sync. Is there a program that will take a little more time and ensure the audio and video stay right on the tick? Will It help if I tell it to save the destination file on a different drive than the source?

Once I get all 3 files sync'ed I would like to edit the center channel of the DD 5.1 track. I have AC3Tool and it will only look at VOB Files, so I suppose I will have to get the 3 movies all cut up and how I want them, then author the 3 3gb files to a DVD, THEN extract the AC3 track using AC3Tool, convert it to 6 .wav files, then re-encode them using a 5.1 AC3 encoder. Is that going to be a problem? Once I get it to .wav I can edit with Audition and if I don't actually change any of the timing I should be able to re-encode and keep in sync. Any suggestions, ideas, thoughts?

Reauthor with dvdshrink and drag all 3 titlesets and shrink on best settings to the size you want,then import the dvd files to tmpgenc dvd author and cut out the parts you dont want.Then author and burn.

ack! that sounds so easy! So jus to be sure I got this all correctly.

1) Re-Author the 3 movies as I normally would in DVD Shrink
2) Import the 3 shrunk movies into TDA
3) Modify the Start and End frames of each one of the movies so that
when authored it will make a seamless dvd, jointing the 3 together
at the frames I specified.

I suppose TDA automatically discards the mpeg information that I "cut off" during the authoring process? If so this is much easier than I thought! I tried to shrink only what I needed in DVD shrink but it doesn't let you go frame by frame..it only allows you jump 20 or so frame chunks.

OK! So if this works part 1 is done. Does my DD5.1 editing plan sound good or is there some better way?

Seems to be like a lot of work for the sound,it would be much easier just to use the 5.1 ac3 as is and discard the dts.You can shrink less so that when you cut the parts with tda it will subtract what you over estimated.

yeah keeping the original 5.1 would be easiest but i'm trying to make a "clean" version by converting some of the words to silence :P

You'll have the same problem in TDA. It will also only let you cut at key frames (I think they're I frames).

will dvd audio extractor convert the DD5.1 to 6 .wav files? if so it will probably be easier to user than AC3Tool...

You could try TMPGEnc Mpeg Editor. There is a trial version although it only allows you to do 30 minutes of video- but you could do just 15 minutes at the end of one and 15 minutes at the beginning of the other to see if you still get the hiccup.

If quality is of a concern, you might want to look at re-encoding instead of transcoding.

i considered both options and since it would be for my personal use on my 27" tv it's not a REAL big concern of mine :P. I got all the video/audio sync'ed up. I just need to know a couple things.

1) Is there a program that will let me extract the DD5.1 from the mpg file OR finished .vob and get 5 mono .wav files?

2) Does the .vob blanker program blank the video And audio? There is a part between the 2nd and third movie where doc faints and i wanted a bit of black space between that and the cut to howdy doody time :P

I once did something like you are trying to do now.
I took a movie and re-edited it to my liking, taking out footage, re-arranging, etc...

My way is a bit long, but it offers complete flexability in your editing decisions. I think it would be of use to you.

1.. extract the DVD video to uncompressed video
2.. extract the 5.1 audio to 6 mono wav files.
3.. load the video and audio into an editor like PREMIERE.
4.. Edit the footage to your liking.
5.. When done, save the video track and all 6 mono audio tracks seperately.
6.. Re-encode the video to DVD MPEG2.
7.. combine the 6 mono wav files to 5.1AC3
8.. REauthor your DVD.

thats what I'm trying to do and I know how to do every step EXCEPT:

Extract the DD 5.1 track into 6 mono .wav files (I said 5 mono .wav files before..that was my mistake..I'd better clarify before getting harshly corrected)

A3CTool will only convert it to a stereo .wav file as far as I can tell. I have the 9gb mpeg file but I don't know how to get the audio out and edit the vocal track. I'd also like to be able to add a bit of black space between doc brown fainting and him waking up to howdy doody time..i dont think i'll have a problem finding a way around that...

Use TMPGENC.
*Select the MPEG TOOLS Option.
*Demux the VOB file to a M2V video file and the 5.1 AC3 file.

THEN


Use BESWEET to convert the 5.1AC3 audio file into 6 PCM-WAV files.(48000 KHZ)
LEFT.wav
RIGHT.wav
CENTER.WAV
SUB.WAV
LEFT SURROUND.wav
RIGHT SURROUND.wav

well i downloaded besweet as suggested and this has got to be the most unnecessarily difficult program i've ever seen. I'm proficient with the software and the command line but this is a little out of control. No readme file either? Other than to thank people? What exactly am I supposed to do with this? I selected all the things i wanted but I get a blank log file pop up. I tried pasting the lines it creates in the command prompt but it says that a filename, volume..or something else may have the wrong paramaters..goodness!

Download BesweetGUI. It makes things much, much simplier. It's not not user friendly, but I found a very short guide that told me all I needed to know. Don't remember if the guide was here on videohelp, but I'm sure somebody will probably post a link to it.

I actually had the gui for it :P. I used the wizard but it was not working, but when I used the gui I got it all worked out. Now onto 5+ hours of listening to the center channel :P

If I were you, I'd re-encode the 3 movies, as you can then edit sound and pictures down to single frame level.

welp it's too late to do it the easy way :P. I spent several several hours listening to the center channel track yesterday so I could edit out what I wanted. I have now compressed it back to a DD5.1 file using the encoder in acid pro 4.0. Now I just need to multiplex it and then figure out how to author/burn a dual layer dvd! I'll have to borrow my brother in laws dvd-burner. So we are here at the last stretch. What are my options with an mpeg file that is a little under 9gb as far as authoring and then burning. I don't care about menus or any of that. perhaps setting chapter points and things..up until now i've only used tda and nero, but i don't think tda understands dual layer.

I just might go ahead and reencode using the DVD Re-Make Program. The challenge will be cutting it at EXACTLY the same places as the existing .mpg file I have because I do not want to have to do the audio all over again. Then I can just multiplex it with the ac3 file thats already done. So I'll use the DVD Shrink to rip with no compression, then trim it up with the mpeg video editor and create a single mpeg file, then let dvd remake work on it overnight...

does such software exist? I need to author and burn this big ol dvd compliant mpeg 2 file. I don't mind using 2 different applications..just need to know which 2. The guides don't seem to venture into anything except copying from one dvd9 to another.
