  1. I have purchased a philips dvdrw burner for my pc, and have converted avi to dvd using Winavi 6, this worked with no problems, I then burn to DVD using NTI 6.7 again with no problems. However when I play the DVD in my standalone DVD player the film freezes when it gets to about 1 hour of playing time. I have tried 3 different avi files and 2 different brands of dvd disks, even tried playing them on a friends dvd player but it always freezes after playing for about 1 hour. This is really annoying and I cant find out why its happening, I followed the guide on videohelp on who to convert avi to dvd and burn to the letter !!!!

Your help would be much appreciated, because this is driving me crazy

    thanks

    1. What brand dvd's ?
    2. Does it playback ok on the computer ?
    3. Freezes suddenly, or begins 'pixelating' gradually before freezing ?

I have tried 2 types of dvd, firstly Mr Data DVD +R (4.7 GB) and secondly, Infiniti Pro DVD -RW (4.7 GB), Yes it plays back on the pc but where it freezes in my standalone dvd player, it just pixelates on the computer and continues playing ok. and when on the stand alone dvd player it just freezes suddenly,

Any idea what is happening coz its got me scratching my head a bit

First thing I always suggest for burning issues is make sure you have the latest firmware for your burner and the latest updates for your software. That may or may not help, actually I don't think it will in your case but it's worth a shot.

seems to me like a case of really really really seriously crappy media. Never heard of those brands, and there're not even listed in the sites' media listing. Put them to the side and get yourself some decent brand DVD-R's. Get a couple of the best such as, Maxell, to test the theory. I'm confident that is the problem. Don't muck about with software and make matters worse before you've discarded the simplest solution.

  10. You said it didnt play right on the PC? Maybe its a bad Frame of some sort.I never burn anything that doesnt first play right on the PC.

  11. This is not a case of bad media if you have burnt this same Movie to different DVD media ,and each Burn Freezes at the same Spot. It could happen , but I highly doubt thats the case here.

Ahh Canadatech, but he didn't say "freeses at the same spot". He said after "about" an hour, which vaigly translates to "the latter part". I still say, crappy media, both brands. Easy to prove. Nighter, Get a decent one like I said and report on the result.

Could be his system too, 128mb of ram isn't much and it might be choking at roughly that same point each time which is why I suggested a slower burn rate. Don't think it's a media issue since the error occurs roughly in the same spot.... correct nighter? That's kind of unclear.

  14. I also said "If".But he also said that it doesnt play right on his PC,and PCs are known to play files that a DVD player can choke on. Yes he should get better media, but at the same time, only burn the final Video when eveything looks good,or use a DVDrw.

  15. sorry folks forgot to say it always happens at the same time 1hr 01min 30sec (playing time) and that is on the three avi's that i have converted to dvd. I just played them on my parents standalone dvd player (goodmans) and it didnt freeze at all but at the time stated above it pixilated for about 10 seconds then played normally right the way to the end !!!!!

Wot the hell is going on ????????

Thanks for all the help guys really appreciate it

I think your sytem is choking...FYI nighter 128 megs is unrealistic for XP, even 256 is a bit low.

  17. Sounds like your Video file,Did you convert the same AVI 3 times?

  18. yeah Iam saving the pennies to get 512mb ram to go with the 128 that should sort the memory prob out. It was three different videos enitrely which is why im baffled. I have also tried burning it through nero 6 ultra edition but that gives an error message saying the file is too big for iso and advises me to use the UDF format ?????

Does sound like your system is choking...

You could try closing absolutely EVERYTHING that isnt vital.
You could wait till you get more memory (but i sense that you aint gonna do that!)

A test that may tell you summat......

Get two 45 minute avi's (can be same thing but need to be distinguishable somehow.
Convert one. Then wothout giving your system a break convert the other.....and see what happens. dont waste on a DVD, but see if they play properly in PC..

    Now i am 0.02 poorer

  25. I've made a ton of coasters myself and I've resolved
to only burn up to about 55 minutes. Any longer seems to freeze. I know, it sucks!
