  1. Been doing data disc burnings on DVR-104 2x dvd-r. Takes full 30 mins a piece. Been burning almost all video files as data disks everytime.

Question, it gets long, boring, tedious burning all this stuff. Since I have several video files still on the hard drive that I would simply love to watch, would it be an absolute no no that watching a simple video with WMP while simultaneously burning a dvd with nero, would that be a very high risk of burn failure? (This is to say that I would watch a video off of C: drive while burning other videos from C: drive to dvd-r drive.)

How about other combos, such as doing a C: to dvd-r drive burn but watching a video file from a seperate hard drive (at G: by the way)?

Question: would watching such a video more likely only slow down the burn or would it be a likely interference and easily cause nero to fail on the burn?

Do whatever you like while burning. Modern burners have burn-proof and buffer underrun protection. There's no more likelihood of fouling a burn because of other activity than there is while you're copying a file to your HD.

In the old days, before BURP, you could make a coaster if you did anything while your machine was burning, and there are still people who think that rule applies still. But it doesn't. If the buffer gets low, the writer will suspend burning until the buffer refills, and then resume. With burnproof, it'll even slow down the burn speed to match it to the rate at which the buffer is being replenished. So the worst thing that could happen from watching a video, or encoding, or anything else during a burn, is that it might take a little longer to finish if you really load down the system.

So check to make sure your burner has BURP first, and if it does, watch videos all you like during a burn. It won't hurt anything

    i have a amd 2800

i sometimes do other things when im buring but i prefer not to just for the simple fact that i like to do things and do them once and right

i guess if u got lots of ram and a fast cpu you can do it

    but really why risk it

As Capmaster said if you got some sort of BURP the it should'nt be a problem

I only have an AMD 2Gig and while burning at 12x I can (and do) surf the web (using firefox), have winamp playing, a peer to peer program running and Mainconcept encoding an avi to mpeg2-dvd ALL at the same time (although I do set Mainconcept to the lowest priority mode via task manager)
Not to mention antivirus + firewall and the rest of windoze!
    Works for me

  5. Using Nero 6.6.0.1 for burning basic data dvd's. Question, where do I find the Buffer underrun protection options menu? Or is there one?

Someone mentioned that BURP is actually a hardware feature in the drive itself? If so, I am using the Cendyne (repackaged Pioneer) DVR-104 2x drive which I bought back in late 2002 and the manufacture was June 2002. I went to that dvdhs.com site recently and updated their firmware as well so I think my drive version is 1.41(?)

Anyhow does anyone think I have BURP or how could I select it? Thanks.

I think buffer underrun protection is more a function of the drive than the burning app. I think it's called something else on my Plextor drive...

    *edit* yeah, "PowerRec"

  7. In Nero select Recorder -> Choose Recorder. Highlite the DVD recorder in question, then click on the Options button. The BURP setting should then be visible at the bottom of the window. Mine says "BURN-Proof Enabled".

    Roderz,

Won't your quality suffer on your avi to mpeg encoding....or just time?

  10. Yes i have all that going, and i have my computer rendering out national weather forecasts for the next 52 weeks whilst burning.... coasters!!!

Most of twhat roderz said he had going you could, but i'd recommend you not do video encoding or anything that takes full cpu hit. If your drive is set to pio mode, then definitely do not do anything while burning, you are sure to suffer performance loss maximus as well as making coasters. If its sets to udma mode then you are pretty much right, as is said, i usually surf this forum and the other little web while burning, but not much else goes on in the comp

No - just takes a little longer and gives more priority to other progs
