  1. I have a Toshiba DVD / VHS combo -- Burned a half hour program and it plays fine on this machine

It will not play on my new Windows XP HP PC or on my go video DVD player.

    Any idea why?

Is DVD - R the right media or should I burn on some other media?

A couple of thoughts: Did you finalize your disc before trying it in your PC/player? Can you see the directory/files when you view the disc in your PC? If you can see the directories, do you have at least 1GB of data? (Some systems don't respond to less than 1GB.)

Also, some drives/players don't like particular brands of media. Some don't like media authored in a particular manner. Some don't like recorded media at all, especially older units.

Try a different brand of media: Fuji, Maxell, TDK, but don't buy Memorex or "cheapies." Hopefully you'll find one that works for you.
