  1. I want to convert a Divx AVI into a DVD-SVCD.

A DVD-SVCD is a DVD that has SVCD video on it. Think of it as a "SVDVD"

There are no articles on doing this. They all explain how to convert SVCD to DVD-SVCD.

Since you are having to encode anyway, might as well convert to CVD (48mhz audio).

Can use dvd2svcd for this (has an option to convert avi to SVCD/CVD/VCD/DVD

When I stop to think about it, it should be as simple as converting to a 480 x 480/576 MPEG-2 file with 48Khz audio with your favorite MPEG encoder, patch the headers with DVDPatcher so your authoring software will accept it and then author with your favorite authoring software. You then might need to patch the VOBs back with DVDPatcher.

Doesn't sound too difficult, does it ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

  4. I have done that and afterwards, the video was shot over to the right too much. Figgered since he was reencoding, why fiddle with making something "off spec".

I think you must have had a setting wrong then. I've just finished creating my product. I took a DivX AVI with VBR MP3 audio, extracted the audio to WAV with Virtualdub, Converted the WAV to AC3 with ffmpeggui, converted the AVI's video to a 480 x 480 MPEG-2 @ 6000kbps, patched the M2V with DVDPatcher, authored with TMPGEnc DVD AUthor, patched the VOBs back and then burnt with Nero. No problems.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  6. how many SVDVD's or DVD-SVCD's can i fit on one DVD disc?

    The DVD disks i have are 4.7gb each. 4.7gb = 4.48MB

    4.48MB / 4 = 1.12

Does that mean i can fit 4 DVD-SVCD's on one DVD disk if i keep each DVD-SVCD mpeg down to 1120mb???

Or will i need space for something else? Am i right?

Yep. Spot on 4,480MB is the absolute most I would try to put on.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I wrote a small guide about this. I haven't uploaded it to this site because I feel I might need to add a few things to it. Take a look at it and see if it will help you. If you have any questions or see where I might have made a mistake post back.

  9. Ok, i created my SVDVD mpeg file (KDVD in diko)...

Now i am curious as to how I would go about burning it?

If i burn 4 DVD compatible MPG's on a disk and stick it in my DVD player, will it just read them and play them?

Or will i NEED to do the whole "menu system" and "author" them so that it will play?

Also, suppose i could just burn them onto a DVD as a data disc, can i do it as a multisession DVD disk and will it still play in the DVD and let me add more movies to it later?

    Highly curious about this...

  11. That reply wasnt too particularly informative...

Am i FORCED to author it because it wont play otherwise?

My player is the JVC XV-S300...

I looked at the reviews and nobody said anything about it being able to play files burned streight-up without authoring.

Also, since nero forces a re-convert of video/audio on authoring, whats the best program to author with with that has a no-reconversion option?

It was ACTUALLY quite informative ...

A vast number of players cannot play raw MPEG-1/2/4 straight off a data disc. For these, you must author your DVD-compliant MPEG-2 to create IFO, BUP and VOB files (DVD for Newbies 101).

TMPGEnc DVD Author, IFOEdit, DVDauthorgui, GUI for dvdauthor .... so basically any decent authoring software
    If in doubt, Google it.

It's like jim said. Even though your player may play raw mpegs a good majority of other players won't. For best future compatibility it would be best to author the disc. Your current player probably won't last forever and your next player may not play raw mpegs so go the safe route and author the disc. Any one of the softwares jim mentioned will do what you want.

  14. Now THAT is what i wanted to hear

thanks guys, that cleared quite a few things up.

So far, ive converted 2 movies over to KDVD using DIKO, but today when i went to run my 3rd movie, the 2nd half wouldnt play, and i found the point at which the audio goes out of synch with the video then the whole thing stops... I was thinking this might be an encoding error since the source didnt have this problem, so i am now re-encoding again... if it happens again then something is wrong with the source maybe...

    I'll post my findings later.

Also, i usually download and try all software mentioned, but i was wondering if you guys could save me a bit of time (if you have used these programs) and tell me where i should start off first...

Basically i am looking for a super-simple authoring program, as easy and quick as possible... Maybe just insert files to author, click a button, and its done... I am not picky at all about background, titles, and all that other useless stuff.... also what is the authoring program that you guys use/like?

I like gui for dvdauthor. It's easy to use and free. I've tried tmpgenc dvd author and it is fairly easy to use but for my purposes gui for dvdauthor works well. I like it because it supports mutiple titlesets which is useful when putting multiple videos with different aspect ratios and or resolutions on the same dvd.

  16. I downloaded and tried to use the "gui for dvdauthor" but i keep getting a "catastrophic failure" error everytime i try to get a screenshot out of my video...

So i downloaded and tried "TMPGENC DVD author demo" but that only lets me burn a max of 4438MB....

Well, i made the 4 KDVD's to total 4475 MB because the total a DVD can hold is 4480MB... so whats up with TMPGENC? Is there an authoring software that will allow me to burn 4480MB worth of video to DVD?

Also, in TMPGENC DVD author it says:

"You can make a DVD-video by burning the exported VIDEO_TS, AUDIO_TS to a DVD-RW using DVD video mode made in your favorite DVD-AUTHOR software"

What the hell does that mean? I thought TMPGENC DVD author WAS an authoring software????

Also, when i put 4473MB worth of video in TMPGENC DVD author, it says that i have put 4614/4438 mb into it...

    how can this be correct?

  17. I would like to ask one more thing...

are there DVD authoring programs that will burn directly to the DVD?

    If so, which?
