  1. I recently bought mine and it indicated that it was manufactured on October 2004. Since I heard that the latest firmware upgrade was back in June, my question is would this player still need an upgrade?

I believe Philips tells you how to check the version number in the PDF file that accompanies the firmware.

From memory, I believe it's hit eject then 5-6-9 ok...

  6. Philips released an upgrade in november, 1109, but it didn't seem to improve anything. What it did do was put in macrovision which for most people doesn't matter, for others it takes away a copying option and thus makes it less valuable. Philips was pretty sneaky in that they didn't say what they did in the update. I wouldn't upgrade it if I were you, and in fact you could completely ruin your DVD player if you try to upgrade it and the power goes out or you unplug your DVD player during the upgrade. So unless you hear good things about a future upgrade, stick to what's in there.
