I have probably asked this before (my memory is very bad), but is there a definitive guide/procedure to adding Chapter stops to a DVD while retaining all the subtitle and soundtrack options? Many discs sold in Region 4 seem to indicate a serious underestimation of the value of the Chapter feature. The Region 4 version of The Deer Hunter, to cite one excellent example, has about fourteen chapter stops. The Region 4 version of StarShip Troopers has about eighteen (compared with Region 1's 30-odd), all of which are placed miles away from the scenes a serious Verhoeven fan would want them. Perhaps one day someone will make a tool to do this without the need for remuxing, etc?

    Hi Nilfennasion,

This is gonna be a sketchy response coz I did it once, and it was more by luck than judgement and a while ago.

But, with a ripped DVD, I created the chapter points I wanted in the PGCs (I think) in the IFO files using IfoEdit.

I'm sorry I can't be more precise, but I hope it points you in the right direction.

I never had to touch any of the VOBs, just "tweaked" the IFO files.

    Good luck...

Okay... one day I might give that a go, although I found IFOedit very tricky and intimidating to use.

I know how you feel... The only comfort you can take is that "it's possible".

I've been thinking about this further - I needed to reset the original chapter timings as creating the IFOs with IfoEdit caused a chapter at the start of each PGC (as long as the box was ticked to do that). As an aside, not ticking the box produced no chapters.

I think the IFO I went into was the main one for the DVD (the VIDEO_TS.IFO), rather than the IFO for each VOB.

Once found, the chapter times are pretty obvious and it's not a great leap of the imagination to figure out how they're set up so you can do your own.

I found this guide - check out the bit under Step 2 - Authoring, the "Optional - 4. If you want chapters..." bit.

The guide itself is for authoring a DVD, but it may reveal something else.

You've got me intrigued... I may have a play to see if I can remember. Thing is, I've got loads of other stuff to do and Xmas to enjoy... maybe the New Year? Remind me if you like...

I have a lousy memory for these things (suspected brain injury), so I may forget all about it. I'll have a look-see at the guide, of course.

One of the most frustrating things about DVDs released in this country is how little regard they seem to have for the Chaptering system. The Godfather only seems to have about one Chapter for every three scenes or something like that. Although from what I hear, it's just as bad in England.

I have to confess... I rarely use the chapter functionality, just watch the film right the way through. So not noticed what it's like in the UK.

I'll make a note to look at this thread for some time in th New Year...

I only use the Chapter function when I get really bored, but it is a very handy thing to have. Sometimes, on a well-authored DVD, I will put the chapter I enjoy most (the ending of the duel in Return Of The Jedi being the best example) on infinite repeat. Something that is very difficult to do when a singular chapter takes up as much as thirty minutes.

    I see your point...

I used to put the bit in "Striptease" where Demi Moore was #@!%*& on infinite loop, but the laser cut a hole through the disc!

That reminds me of how I would get guests who overstay their welcome to leave. Simply put Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle on infinite loop. Poor Demi, thinking she would revive her career with that piece of crap.
