I personally don't know of any FWIW. I do know that Mainconcept MPEG Encoder can encode to MPEG from a capture (on-the-fly, as opposed to capturing to hd then re-encoding to MPEG), but you'd still need to author and burn the file.

I've got a fair idea that there's no device that could keep the transfer rate up to the burner at a sufficient level (yet) in order for this to be done.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Just to get this out of the way for someone who won't be able to resist "Why don't you get a DVD Recorder"? With that said, I don't know of any, sorry.

That's not as "left-field" as it first sounds, though, especially if we're talking DV, or anything via firewire. It is actaully probably the fastest/best no-frills method IMO.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Ulead DVD MovieFactory 3 and Ulead DVD Workshop 2 can both do a direct to disk capture. Whether they use the hardrive to buffer the incoming video though I have no idea. Try downloading the trial versions from www.ulead.com and give them a try.

If you cannot afford a DVD recorder, you probably cannot afford software either.

I use the ADS InstantDvd-2 with thier latest capture software capwiz ver 3.5 which has a option DTD, which is a true no harddrive use, direct to media disc capture/author/burn. The product comes bundled with Ulead software so it is very possible that option comes from the affiliation with Ulead and the newer versions of Ulead are also true DTD. Older versions of Ulead that said Direct to Disc were only automations for process of cap to hdd/author/burn.

    Software encoders:
    - Mainconcept 1.4.2 : The best if you use 720 x 576/480. Need tweaks and adjustments for 704/352 x 576/480. Expensive
    - WinDVR3 : Fake results, but many don't notice any diffence because of it. I wouldn't pay for fake results myself
PowerVCR II: Need some hacks to make it work. Not bad and cheap
WinDVD Recorder: I never test that one. Seems promising. Expensive...
Virtualvcr/virtualdub with YMPEG. The cheapest solution. Buggy. Promising. Flexible (if they make it work).

And of course, a latest ATI (I don't like those cards, others love them)

Since I originally posted in this thread, I've been able to have a play with neoDVD, and all I can say is *WOW*. I'm very impressed with the short workout I gave it. Just press Start Capture, and it will capture like any good software. Once you press stop manually or have set it to stop automatically, it immediately goes forth and authors for you. Depending on the target you set, it will also burn once it'd finished the authoring. It's well-known the All-In-One tools often struggle in one or more areas for flexibility, but as far as All-In-Ones go, this certainly grabbed my attention as being one of the better ones. I'll still use my dedicated tools for options and flexibility, but this is worth checking out for those quick-n-dirty captures.
    If in doubt, Google it.
