"This exceptional opening will go down in industrial and technological history," Chirac said, praising the designers and builders for creating "a prodigy of art and architecture — a new emblem of French civil engineering."

The bridge will serve as a symbol of "a modern and conquering France," he said.

Designed by British architect Norman Foster, the steel-and-concrete bridge ..........

The Statue of Liberty was designed and manufactured by the French. I don't see you knocking that.

exactly.....the staute of liberty was built by the French and it's a symbol of America's freedom(for more on my opinions about that click my sig) , so why can't a british designed bridge be a symbol of 'modern and conquering france'?

I just found it humurous that he refers to it as he did and the very next line in the article says the architect was British. If you can't find the humour in that, oh well..... As for lost in translation that's possible but it was written by a Frechh guy...

It is humourous in a way but makes me think back to when people were rejecting everything French yet shut up when the Statue of LIberty was brought up.
    His name was MackemX

What kind of a man are you? The guy is unconscious in a coma and you don't have the guts to kiss his girlfriend?

I suppose the difference is that the Statue of Liberty was a gift from the French that went on to become a national symbol - if it hadn't have been donated then there would have been something else, after all there is no shortage of home-made symbols in the US.

Let's hop the symbol of a modern and conquering France doesn't go the way of their modern and conquering airport:

Mystery over the Paris airport collapse

or the way of our Millennium Bridge:

    London's Millennium Bridge to close
