My Bourne Supremacy buddy called this morning,
asking if I had given a test run to MTR 2.6,
and I happily reported I did and all was successful.
So he said 'cool' and said he was going to try
    his again.

So he went to Versiontracker and downloaded MTR 2.6.
Trashed his other off his main HD, and then drag/drop installed
    the new.

He launched it, it opened, he got to the main screen, and
he inserted his disc. MTR did not scan the disc, and he said
it 'just popped in, no prompts, nothing'.
He went to click the "go" button, and it unexpectedly quit.

I told him 'no prob, you probably just need to trash your
mtr.geezerbuttz.plist file, run cocktail, and after reboot try again.'

well he did ( with me on hold for the whole thing) and still nothing.
So I said put it off until I could come take a look.

I get over there, we run DW, all checks out.
I check his dmg file he got from VT and I notice it's 1.1 MB.
So I knew mine came down at 1.0MB. And I got mine from here.
So we trash all his MTR stuff, and re-download from here, sure enough
1.0MB. We open the .dmg, drag/drop to install, launch comes up.
we set the saved folder, and put in the disc.

No scan for RCE, no Scan for anything, it just pops in
    like ( snaps fingers) that.

We press go, it goes right to cancel, then back to go again.
We press go again, it unexpectedly quits, kern Bad Access is
    the error it generates.

We trashed everything one more time, still no go.

Could there have been a difference in the installers, or was the
file size of the .dmg a weird HFS thing?
Disc plays fine through Apple DVD Player, mounts fine also.

Still looking into this, but so far TT4, repair permissions, cocktail
to clean caches, nothing gets it to work.

  2. Have you tried creating a new user account and installing MTR onto that. I sometimes try that to see if something in my user prefs is fouling up the works. I remember at one point hearing that APE wasn;t working well with MTR. Norton is a usual suspect as well. AlsoStuffit can foul-up the download. It seems more likely that simething is wrong with your friend's Mac than with the installer.

  3. hmmmmm.. that is strange...

we need all system info from you , if you are still unsuccessfull..

or better still , get me private e-mail addy to send a clean build of 2.6..

There was a ( very small ) issue with 2.6 , but as it runs on your mac , that is not the issue. Anyway , the issue was corrected.

My guess is it's due to your DVD drive models. What drives do you guys have? Some drives (namely the HL-DT-ST drives Apple has been using recently) seem to cause a lot of problems for MTR.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."

    Ok,
real quick I'll fire off the specs that I know:

    G5 Dual 2 ghz,
    8GB of Ram
610 GB of HD space ( three internal SATA)
Drive is a Pioneer DVR-107 internal i believe.

I'm headed over to his place now,
I'll post back more after I get there.

Can't say I'm thrilled to hear that! My Mac is coming up two years old and it has an HL-DT-ST drive in it that hasn't caused me any troubles yet.

I'm one of the early contributors to MTR's development; perhaps you could be more specific as to what problems you've seen and what (if anything) can be done to work around them.

Ok, got back here's what I found.
    First, a correction: his G5 has a
Pioneer -106D in it, not a -107 as i thought.

Second, pj is on to something.
    I created a new account ( me)
with admin privilages, and then tried to launch
MTR. It launched, but did not bring me the window(!).
So I went to Preferences under MTR, and the window came
up fine, but then crashed when I tried to drag it across
    the screen.

So I went and trashed all MTR related items
( app, read me, and plist) and re-installed.
It came back to life, and seems
ok. Logged out as me, logged back in as my friend
to his account (BM) and launched MTR.
It came up, I put in a DVD, MTR tried to scan, MTR crashed.

So, at this point, i think it is something in his user account,
but don't know what. He has some work to finish, so tomorrow
I'll have him create a new user account, and we'll get his stuff transferred over to that, and see if that fixes the problem.
