So... I'm considering playing with a another cap device in my house... As it stands my cable service is routed directly from the box (sheilded of course) to the line filter/surge protection. I then split it and one lead goes to the cable modem, the other passes though the jvc hr-dvs3 (my current analog to DV converter via fiewire) and on to the TV.

If I add a tuner/cap device for quick and dirty program caps (damn you mainconcept pvr!) I'll have to add yet another split (this is getting silly, not to mention the degraded signal)! are there any pci or usb cap devices out there with a pass through?

how many splits are you all dealing with?

    One.
    Had 2-3 in the past.
Use good ones, cost about $20 each sometimes.

    Hello,

None. I don't have cable. I record to videotape and then transfer that. I don't have a good enough antenna upstairs next to the computer to do a straight cap that way.

8 ways! and your signal is not mud?

I thought that every time you split you cut the "strength" in half??

Your cable company should run a second line for the cable modem.
Why not just buy a decent Video Switcher with two outs, one to the tv/monitor one to the capture device.
Of course if you want a second capture device that is running off something like vcr++ that won't help.
It is really a bad idea to split cable too much.

I have mine split 5 ways, and the signal is fine. 2 of them aren't hooked up to any device though, and 1 is the cable mode.

I have 11. Cable comes in and is split, one to cable modem, other to high pass filter. From the filter to a 3 way splitter/combiner, two of those inputs are from channel combiners( add my DVD player, VCR, satellite, and security cameras to cable channels) from there I go to an adjustable 5mhz-1gig amplifier, out of the amp it goes to an 8 way splitter that is about centered in my attic( this way cable lengths are all about the same) and then to the TVs.

i have 5 also.. it comes in the basement to a 4 way and i have a box in my room and my kids room and my front room.. i use to split the cable again in my room to my tv, cap card then modem.. BUt i would loose cable modem every so often.. to many splits.. had fits with it. so i split it in my room to my tv and cap card and have a line from the extra room going to the modem thats going to a wireless router to feed all the computers.. my cable signal is 90% i guess the cap card has some salt and pepper but for the most part i get good signal to all tvs. i have no amps.. BUT i do have good splitters.. all the good ones will have the ohm drop on the lable.. you obviusly want the one with the smallest drop..

I had a dedicated cable line straight from the street to my cable modem.....then I had about 3 splits in my regular TV Cable line.
Have I told you that I miss my cable modem?.....
