I've been burning discs in my TDK 8x burner, using 4x Memorex media. Never had a problem. I just started using 4x Ritek Ridata, and was having no problems.

Then during one of the burns I got a message saying something like "Failed to run at 4x speed". I burned the same file onto a different disc successfully (so I knew it was not the file that was the problem), then tried the original disc again, and got the same error message.

I then tried to burn the same file, on the same disc, but at 2x speed instead of the default speed (which of course was 4x given my media). It burned successfully that time.

My question is, why would it burn at a slower rate? Something wrong with the disc?

This is one of those "trying to understand how things work" questions, thanks for any help folks.

    Dodgy disc - it happens.
    If in doubt, Google it.
