I've had an interest in building a wooden case for some time now and I'm almost ready to get it started. I build instruments for a living, so the actual construction will be pretty easy, once I get the plans down.

I have one question, before I get started. Does the motherboard of a computer need to be attached to a metal base? If I see something I can build it, but I'm horrible with electrical systems. A simple circuit confuses the heck out of me. If the system does need to be grounded somehow, would a ground wire attached to something metal on the motherboard do the trick?

I'm not worried about heat dissipation issues. I'll solve that with the case design.

When I'm done with the project, I'll post some pictures.

the motherboard does not, as far as I know.

I had one mobo that came with plastic standoffs to float it above the case and not touch it, so no.

it is supposed to be shielded completely though - and on higher speed systems can make a difference (plus shield what leaks OUT also)

but you can still shield a wood case though ..just line it ...

some nice shiny copper would look good in there

Wood Contour builds every component out of wood and/or stone (Corian really) - for people that dont like or are Allergic to plastic (plus it looks really cool)

  7. That's all stunningly beautiful, but why the plain-styled non-ergonomic mouse? And it's got... (gasp) A CABLE?!

I bet upgrades would be expensive, too.

As for a wooden case, I think that has the potential to look very nice. Just ensure the ventilation is top-notch - wood will insulate it and reduce heat dissapation via. radation (of heat).

    Hello,

Not to be too sarcastic or tounge-in-cheek about it, but do you guys use pressure treated wood??? I mean wouldn't that stuff expand and contract in the different seasons??? Wouldn't that affect how the motherboard rests???

you have your choice of wired or wireless mouse -- and screen size .... all those are made from solid wood - no veneer at all ..

no -- these are high quality hardwood construction , not pressure treated pine for back decks ..

Thanks for the links. Some of those cases are beautiful. I didn't really care for the leather laminates, though.
