I purchased the LG drive model GSA-4120B which originally came with firmware "A102". I flashed with the latest official firmware "A111" and not sure if the problem is related to the new firmware or not, I just noticed that the drive no longer read the DVD-RAM discs that I recorded with the firmware "A102", it is showing as a blank disc asking if I want to format.

When I called LG technical support, I was informed that I should never "Jump Up" when flashing firmware, the recommendation is to always "Step Up", in another words start with original "A102" than go to "A104", next "A110" and last "A111".

Please let me know what is the correct way to flash firmware, not sure if are different recommendations depending who is the manufacture or if this is a standard procedure.

    I appreciate your comments.

    Thank you,
    Wilson

    That is malarkey.

I have updated firmware on three burners by installing the latest versions and never had any problems.

The way they told you to do it would require multiple installs and reboots.

    Bazooka,

Thank you for your fast reply and comments. I also feel that their comments were not correct. I was also informed that I can't flash the fimware back to "A102" once I have the latest. I guess the only way to save the data I have on the DVD-RAM discs is to find somebody that has a LG drive with the "A102".

I called 3 different times to see if I would get a more knowledgeable person and they all say the same thing, very odd.

I don't know if it's malarkey or not. But I do know that just because something works with no problems for one person (or 1,000,000 people) doesn't mean it will work for everyone.

But then I've never had a bit of trouble with Windows XP- guess that means it's the perfect OS since I never had any problems.

Wilson look for an alternative flashing program that works with your drive. Try rpc1.org, I would bet they have a flashing program that works with your burner and you might be able to use it to go back to the older firmware.
The real answer lies in completely understanding the question!

That means LG has crappy programmers. Any good programmer knows to incorporate previous firmwares into the new ones.

Sounds like they may not be doing that. Stupid.

Again with the programmers! I'll try not to take it personally.

@wilsonrio - watch for a "new" firmware soon. Sounds like it was taken out of the currnet version for some reason. You could always flash it again to make sure nothing happened the first time. Doubtful, because if it did, you'd more than likely have a dead drive right now.
