  1. Hi, I have newbie question about using a dvd recorder instead of a typical VCR. I wanted to use it for recording my surveilence tapes, my camera gives instructions for a VCR but as long as the DVD recorder has A/V inputs it should work right?

    thanks

Resolution will suffer as you crank datarate down. What you need more is a model that will decrease frame rate while maintaining resolution. Better yet with motion triggers.

Talk to your security equipment provider. I'd be surprized if someone isn't doing this.

  4. i forgot to mention that my ideal setup would be a digital video recorder so it could recorde much longer and then be erased or if necessary backed up to a seperate hard drive. Problem is the price for these units, i'd like to spend under $250. If you guys have any DVR recomendations I'd like to hear them!

    thanks

Perhaps a DVD recorder with a built-in HDD. That way you can use the 4 hour mode (which knock on wood should be enough quality for your task) but you record to the built-in HDD so in the 4 hour mode you can probably get 24 hours or more before the HDD fills up.

Once it fills up you can break it into 4 hour chunks to put it on DVD discs or if nothing happened ... just delete it and start over.

However you are looking at more than $250 ... more like $450 give or take.

We have security cameras at our store and I finally chucked the VCRs.

I went a slightly different route than you. I am using computers to
    capture the video.

I bought most of the cameras, quads, etc from Supercircuits.com.
You can check their website for recorders.

Bought most of the computer parts from Newegg, of course.

Went through many, many VCRs and tons of tapes. That's
why I made the switch! The $$$ were adding up.

Still not finished building though. The bad guys seem to
    always be one step ahead.

    Good Luck! :P

EDIT............ Maybe I misunderstood your post. I thought you
wanted to hook up security cameras. My bad!!!

  8. They actualy make a unit that takes a HD Motion and four signal input.

  9. You can get about 40 hours in the SP mode (2 hour) onto the hard drive of a Panasonic E80H. It won't happen for under 250.00 just yet.

  10. If you use disks instead of HD get a panny that does dvddram (all of them do I think), cause these disks have a rewrite to rating of 100,000 times....

The new ones do 12hours per disk I think. You'd have to try it to see if the picture is clear enough for you.
