  1. Sheesh...you format and install everything fresh, don't abuse your registry...and for some reason, windows starts fuzzing out about every six months or so...

    Why?

I have Win2000 installation on a one POS very old machine (233mhz/196mb ram) and it is running on it already for 4+ years, it doesnt crap out, nor crashes.
Use windows as windows, dont try to make i.e. unix server out of it - and it'll run smooth and for long.
Avoid any non-windows stuff requiring extra APIs, compilers etc and you won't have a problems.
People often install stuff written for java desktop or *nix environment using various tricks and libraries, and wonder later why damn windows craps out Im not defending windows, dont get me wrong, my OS of choice is slackware linux, and windows is POS OS, but it doesnt change the fact that 99% of problems with it comes out of the user's side, not from OS itself.
Just because you can install/run almost anything on windows (any *nix wouldnt let you) doesnt mean you should

    I second that.

I have been running XP on both systems and they usually last over a year and a half.

  6. Windows XP has been running on my laptop for about 2.5 years. Nil particular problems. Still up and running and stable.

    Hello,

I always run adaware and norton cleansweep at least once a week. I had win2000 on my old computer and it ran perfectly for almost a year.

Now I'm doing the same on my new Winxp pc and expect the same results.

    Kevin

PS run a scandisk every now and then too

  8. I'm getting at least a year out of win2000 and later operating systems. I remember when windows 98 was out the most you could reasonably get before it was time to reinstall was about three months, if you used your computer a lot. Sure, I'd seen installations that were a couple of years old, but the people using them didn't realize how pathetically slow their computer was.

I figure that part of the fun of woning a computer involves periodically reformatting the HD and starting from scratch.

I kinda know where Red is coming from...

Fresh install with OS, Office, and normal compliment of video apps installed ... boot time - 6 seconds (did this 9 months ago)

about 6 months later and only a few kiddie games installed, a 4 port hub and a dymo printer installed.... boot time ... about 35 seconds. (drives defragged too)

    That is not that bad.

The average is supposed to be 30 seconds.

I remember install times on win98. A fresh one might take 25 seconsd and then with each week it would increase by 5-10 seconds until it was taking several minutes and even after loading there was plenty of HD churning to go on.

Except even worse was Windows ME. That operating system had to be reinstalled twice a day.

Xp after you install it, if you do not do any tweaks, takes 30 seconds to boot.
