___________
I want the best of both worlds......still-photos AND video, from one camera.
I ordered the Canon S1 yesterday. It is supposed to take great
still-shots, but also take good looking short video clips.
I found some video clips on the internet and they look okay.
Had to decide between a video camera that could take stills, or
a digital camera that could shoot some video.
The S1 seems to be a good choice. Should arrive Wednesday.
Here's my question.............
You want still-photos AND short video clips......
Would you buy a digital camera, knowing that the video would
suffer slightly?
or........
Would you get a video camera, knowing that the stills would
suffer slightly?
The Canon S1 is less than $400, so keep that in mind.

Hello,
For under $400 I would think you'd shoot for a High quality STILL camera with video capabilities.
UNLESS you intend to use it as a FULL TIME camcorder. Then obviously the cam w/ still funcition is more up your ally.
As long as you did some research on it (which it seems you did) I don't think you'll be too disappointed.

Still cameras "built it" to video cameras will never hold a candle to the quality of a good still camera.
Get a good video cameras because of it's video ability. Canon ZRxx video cameras are excellent from what I've seen to date.
And then get a good still camera. Digital SLRs are best, of course, for digital, and then there are some decent point-n-shoots. Stick to Nikon or Canon for best results.
And there is NOTHING wrong with 35mm film, either!Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

While the 8-megapixel comsumer digicams offer high-resolution for those big prints, most images are viewed on-screen, and are rarely printed larger than 8x10-inches. The Canon PowerShot S1's 3-megapixel images satisfy most printing needs, while its image-stabilized 10x zoom lens minimizes the need for cropping because of its powerful magnification. The S1 will please both the beginner and the advanced photographer with its consistently well-exposed and sharp results. If you're looking for a light-weight, stylish, moderately-priced digicam that is versatile enough to handle most family events while getting you close to sports action or wildlife, the Canon PowerShot S1 IS should be high on your list.
PS with the right coupon you can get this camera for $324.10 shipped from Dell. -
Just picked up my "canon s1 is" a few days ago. $477 Can. Decent camera. Too many options. Video mode is superb, need to buy a high speed compact flash cards. Shoots poorly in low light. Right now I have shot a few pictures today. Looks awful due to poor lighting. But I am still learning. I'm sure if you play with it long enough, you can produce wonderful photos like the sample files you see in steves digicam or dpreview. I think it's the best of both worlds, Avi's are easy to edit. you'll probably have some "issues" like me, but have fun. -garman

I paid $357 for the camera from Newegg. Could have found it cheaper elsewhere

Thanks again. :P

I just tried shooting some AVI's. They look great but I wish the stabilizer was better. It's not like camcorders image stabilizer. This needs more balls. Anyway good luck with it. I myself, a novice photographer is struggling with all the options. Too much info to absorb before christmas. -garman
BTW how much was the CF card? It's kind of slim pickin's in toronto for these cards. -
Tips for stable images:
1) Stop breathing for a few seconds.
2) Learn to be steady (your camera may be too light)
3) Use tripds, monopodsWant my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

Smurf, tripods to bulky, just wanna take my camera out and shoot. Setting up a tripod takes time and the space it takes, rather set it on a rock or something. The not breathing thing is a great idea. You must have some fire arms at home. I've read somewhere that sharpshooters use this technique. Biathletes try to slow thier heart rate down when shooting targets after skiing. -garman

Well I hope the capture isn't too long. Last image I want to capture is camera hitting dirt after I pass out from holding my breath.

I'm a photographer, been doing this for years.
You've got to be calm. The heartrate thing definitely applies. Breathing exercise help, as does some sort of meditative habit. I like to eat a piece of candy to relax, something like a peppermint.
You cannot be distracted by bugs and things either. Clear your mind of everything but the image at hand and the overall assignment (yes, consider EVERYTHING an assignment, personal or not). A photograph is about a moment in time, THIS MOMENT, NOW, not what you had for lunch yesterday, or the activity you're doing tomorrow. Forget those things when the camera is in hand, they do not matter.
If a tripod is too bulky, get a monopod. It's nothing more than a collapseable stick with a rubber foot. You still hold the camera, but only the horizontal axis. The vertical is taken care of by the monopod. I hate tripods too, use monopods almost exclusively. Give ability to move quickly, and they're extremely fast to unscrew if necessary. Bogen makes the best ones, go to a camera store. Also makes for a great weapon.
Video is slightly more complex, but the same basic principles apply.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

The IS on the S1 should help out some when shooting in low light.
