Taiyo Yuden is regarded as one of the top "quality" manufacturers of optical media.

Compatability (with both recorders and players) varies quite a bit, since media quality is only one of the variables.

The combination of recorder (brand, chipset, firmware), Media Manufacturer/quality, media type (+R, +RW, -R, -RW), and player used, all play a role. Trial and error is the only way to know for sure what will work.

Maxell (Made in Japan) - are also an excellent choice. These discs are either TY, or Maxell's own.

    TY -R media:
    TYG01 (4x)
    TYG02 (8x rated)

    TY +R
T01-001 - (4x) - The -001 stands for revision 1, this media is nolonger manufactured)
T02-000 (8x) - again the -xxx number is the revision)

BEWARE: Mirror Brand and a few others use TY MIDs, but are FAKE!

While it is true that TY will work well in most recorders, I don't think a media exists that will work well in all recorders. I'm very fond of RICOHJPN, which works really well in my Lite-On. However, I have read reports that TY doesn't always work in my drive, although it usually does.

While TY will probably work for you, it is unfortunate that the only way to know for sure is to test media in your burner and see how it works for you. For example, I have been told that MCC +R is great and Prodisc +R and CMC +R are not so good. However, the MCC I used failed badly while I have'nt burned a coaster yet with the Prodisc and CMC I've tried. However, the Prodisc -R didn't work so well for me.

But you have to keep expense in mind. TY is often more expensive than name brands sold in stores. Many people don't mind paying for that kind of reliability. However, if you test, you can often find less expensive media that works just as well for you. The most used words on this forum are "I can't understand why everyone is saying this is crap media. I've burned 100 without a coaster".

One big no-no of course is to order 500 TY before testing a sample Nobody's perfect.
