As the title states, I am sure this is quite the novice question.
I took some video captured from a dvd using dvd shrink to get a vob file then converted it to a mpg with mpeg-vcr. So now I have a bunch of nice mpg files that I drop into premiere. I type to convert the file to a movie and get a nice video without sound. Where did I go wrong? Each individual movie had sound just not the premiere made avi?
    Thanks for your help

Okay to add to the confusion, i tried dropping the mpg file into virtualdub to convert it to an avi to drop it into premiere. When I did this virtualdub had an error message reading: no video frames found in mpeg file.

But I can play the movie just fine by itself

What are you trying to achieve? A DVD to AVI rip? If so, there are lots and lots of guides.
If that's not what you want, read on:
VirtualDub can't open mpeg2 files, but VirtualDubMod can!
You probably ripped the AC3 audio track, and many editors (like Premiere, obviously) don't handle AC3. If there's a LPCM audio track, select that instead, when ripping with DVDShrink.

    PS!
But I can play the movie just fine by itself
It's a common novice (or noob, as we put it here...) mistake to put any significance at all in this observation. When it comes to conversion/editing it means nothing! DS

Just taking a stab here, I have had this problem a lot where for some reason Premiere would not want to export audio when I use the MOVIE export...
