Well, after much thought, I figured I would setup my own PERSONAL homepage. I've never had to actually do any of the work in order to get a name registered or anything, so I was wondering if someone could answer me this...

1. I live in Japan, so does it matter if I use an American server?
2. What's the average cost, size etc...
3. Is there anything in particular that I should look for when choosing a server?

Are you wanting to actually run a server on your machine, or just have your domain hosted somewhere? Running it yourself you can do it for the cost of the domain name - 4-5 bucks a year plus whatever you're already paying for your ISP, vs paying 5-10 bucks a month to have a minimal bandwidth restricted site hosted somewhere.

1. The only issue that I can think of is if your host does or doesn't accept payments from out of the country. :P I would use http://www.registerfly.com/ to register my domain name.
2. I pay $9.99 a month and I get 2 GB of disk space and 100 GB of data transfer. I know what you are all thinking, but my host is very reliable and doesn't complain when I use all of my data transfer. :P http://www.mher.org/
3. It all depends on what you need, what exactly do you plan on doing with your host?

I pay $10 a year for the domain from domains410.com and less then $20/ YEAR for cheap hosting over at doorhost.net.

And no it doesn't matter where your host is as long as you have a form of payment they accept.. My old host was in Canada.

I just setup a domain at godaddy and also let them host it. $4 a month for hosting is pretty cheap in my book, plus they offer a lot of extras

I'm thinking about moving my domain to Dreamhost, I've heard good things from other users, and they're having a sale right now for the basic service.

Isn't bandwidth more expensive in Japan? Although you're fluent, I can imagine that it must still be more of a headache to register in Japanese, as well.

All you will ever need, http://hosting.aplus.net/soloxr.html For a basic webpage even this is far beyond anythung you will ever need.

That dreamhost didn't look too bad either..... Do you know what kind of speed you can get off the servers housepig? I can get about 150-200k off mine now which is about what I get off just about anywhere good. Another thing is how about reliability, my site hosted on aplus has never been down in the 3 years I've had it and I usually check it at least once every two days.. They claim a 99.9% uptime which I tend to believe.

It's a small webhosting company but I've been through quite a few web host over the years & they are worth Triple what they charge... I've used Interland & other large web hosting companies, their service is far better!

I promise you that any of your web host has never done this...
Twice my forum went down due to me being an Idiot... Within just a few hours they call me on the phone telling me that they can't find nothing wrong on their end & how can they help me get back up? You can't ask for more. FYI: I didn't call them or tell them I was having problems or that I was down?

Server Speed, LOL, I have a slow connection but I download at 360KB/Sec off their server, I can dl a 26.8MB .sql backup file off the server in 89 seconds. You can't ask for much more than that.

Am I affiliated with this company, Yes I advertise his web hosting company for FREE, Does he pay me anything or compensate me, NO they don't, But I get excellent service & that's all I want!

I completely forgot I posted this question. I posted it on my way out to work and meant to check it as soon as I got home. Thanks for all the input.

Anyway, I just wanna have a couple pages to promote my private lessons and translation services. Registering here in Japanese is a pain in the ass, and expensive as shit. It's about 200 bucks to get your domain, and 40 bucks a month to host...thats the average, I think...anyway, that's why I was look for something overseas. I'm sure they would accept VISA.
