  1. I have an ATI AIW 8500DV and use a video stabilizer for copy-protected tapes. I have backed up most of the VHS tapes I want to preserve on DVD without any problems, but I have one that just wont work. It is a store bought original that has hardly been played. I am able to copy it tape to tape without using my stabilizer so I doubt it is a copy protection issue. I have also tried capturing from the copy but I get the same results. I have read all the info I can find and haven't found a solution. Some posts have said that if the quality of the tape is bad it can behave this way but in most of those cases they are dropping frames, which I am not. I have also been able to capture from old home made VHS tapes in much worse shape without problems. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Here is a still of how it captures:

  3. The problem was the ATI card. I bought a USB capture device and the movie captured flawlessly.

Not really a problem it was doing what it was supposed to do wasn't it.

  5. Why was it supposed to distort the picture? The movie wasn't macro protected. I bought an ADS DVD Xpress and it captured just fine.
Why is the ATI card supposed to be unable to capture this movie?

Well Watson by reason of deduction. I'm making a few assumptions here. First I'm assuming the tape plays fine from VCR to TV so we know there is nothing wrong with the tape. I'm also assuming you have no trouble capturing other tapes with your card so we know that there is nothing wrong with your card.

Therefore since the tape is fine and the card is fine there is something amiss. I'll assume it's copy protected which is causing what you see, I could be wrong. Have you tried copying any MV protected tapes with the ADS, I'm unfamiliar with it. Some capture units do not have MV detection.

  7. The tape is not copy protected. If you read my first post I mentioned that I could tape from tape to tape with no problem. I also mentioned that I use a stabilizer. I have captured many copy protected tapes with the ATI card using the video stabilizer and never had any problems.

From what I have read the problem is caused by ATI's over sensitive macrovision detection. I have come across several posts where people can't capture videos they have recorded themselves with their camcorders.

Also what I have read and the responses I have received from posts the only solution to capture such movies using the ATI cards seems to be the one Lordsmurf gave, which is get a full time based corrector.

The reason I tried the USB capture device is because it was cheaper solution and also the hardware was easier to find and more available without having to order online.

It's not "just" ATI. These days, pretty much ever capture card, DVD recorder and VCR incorporates extremely sensitive anti-copy detection. No matter what device you buy, at some point in time, you'll likely face some sort of related issue.
