  1. I read in several review that one of the primary "cons" is that this unit's tuner only provides mono audio. You can get stereo as an INPUT, like from a VHS tape or a DV Camcorder, but to record TV shows or the like it gives you mono.

If I would want to do alot of TV taping, then would this be a big issue? Is there a way to get around this? Thx.

  2. Since I do a lot of transferring, I have a JVC S-VHS VCR plugged into input 1 of my 5001 (with the same mono problem). For important TV recordings, I use the signal from the VCR for video and stereo audio. I shouldn't HAVE to do this, but it works well.

Would it have really driven the price of this unit up that much to use a stereo tuner? Sheesh.

  3. hmmm....to do that don't you have to be there to turn on the VCR ? Does this prevent you from setting a timed record? I can't think of how else it would be used with a VCR. Anyone else have a "work-around" to the mono audio issue?

    Yes, mono coax.

I'll do one of two things. Either set the VCR to record the same thing on S-VHS (sort of like a back-up recording) which would feed the signal to the DVD recorder or just leave the VCR powered on to that channel.

I do this on valuable recordings. I still trust my VCR more than DVD recorders.

  8. thanks for the answers, all. I had all but scrapped thisone from my choices and was going to go straight DVD Player and get a recorder when they're more main-stream, but now I think I'll grab this 5005 next time I see it cheap somewhere. I can just use the VCR tuner and be all set.

    Thanks again.

On DVD recorders do you set the record up like a VCR - eg. "ch. 10 start 8PM end 9pm"? I know you also choose the quality, say 2hr for best on this one, but you don't have to take the full 2hr - do you?

This one is sold at Costco, for $179 but I've heard it drop to $159 still not bad it's the same except recorder/player as the liteon 5101 the only major difference is the ALL-WRITE feature which the Liteon 5101 sold at Sam's Club doesn't have.

The Liteon 5101 sold at Sam's Club is $139 and for $20 bucks more at Liteon 5005 Costco you can get the ALL-WRITE model with CDR/CDRW, DVD+R, DVD+RW DVD-R, DVD-RW burning and a front door hing to protect the DV, Audio / Video inputs.

You can record in stereo from CATV turner on the Liteon DVD Recorders well the 5101 and 5005 has the feature, don't know about the older models. I own the 5101 thinking about getting the 5005 just heck of it with the ALL-WRITE features, just upgraded the firmware to fix some issues.

But I can tell you I get stereo from my tuner STR. No need to use the VCR to get stereo or you can use your CATV Digital Stereo Tuner like I have with my Comcast I use a 4 way audio video splitter amp which takes standard video and convert it to S-Video, if I want to record off the digital channels through the Liteon 5101. The same can be done on the Liteon 5005 they both have the same inputs and outputs.

I use the LP 4 hrs mode to record off the CATV Tuner, I get great results even better when I use the 4 way audio to video input recording on Maxell DVD+RW.
