Well, I got a problem with the cracking program I downloaded. I looked everywhere on the net for info on howto's and getting it to run but no luck. My last resort was writing to this thread. Hoping any of you guys could help me out.

How well would a post like that go over here?

Actually, he's a regular! The site is pretty upfront about it's rules on the matter. I guess it's just not as well moderated.

I'm just saying how I would treat it if he showed up here. If he was new, I'd ban him.

If he was here for a while, and had several normal posts, it was probably just a screw-up by him. Then I would give him a yellow card and suggest that he read the rules again

Once upon a time I was reinstalling Starcraft and couldn't find me Disk Case. When the serial came up I just made something up, it didn't work.

In frustrations I tried again, and it freaking worked! Later that day I found the case and reinstalled. My roommates and I used to have a blast with starcraft.

I have not stopped by the forum that originated this thread, but I can tell you that by personal experience there are several security tools in Linux to crack passwords periodically (the process is automated) in linux and BSD servers, normally they are used to "test" how good the chosen combinations of characters are.

There is no malice in this kind of activity because the main goal is to advice users to use stronger passwords if one of them is using short, simple combinations.

In fact, there is a package called "Crack" that can be configured to run in the background silently and test each password used by each user, if x user is found to have a weak one the daemon ( running process) sends him an e-mail with a recommendation to change it.
