As I said before, my old PC died a few days ago...
went over to my friend's house tonight, the 2.8 he had was no good, so he hooked me up with a P4 2.66 Ghz, Intel D845EPI/D845GVSR MoBo, ATI 9800 video card, new case with a 300 watt PSU and frontside USB and microphone ports, plus a 250 GB Seagate HD all for $60![]()
He gave me the HD because he couldn't get a 2.8 processor until this coming friday.
I don't know how good the MoBo is, but I'm having him pick me up one friday when he gets the new processor, I am looking for suggestions and will be researching the MoBo's this week. I have always been a AMD man, so I'm kind of a Pentium virgin.
XP Pro is just finished installing, so I have some work to do and some programs to load...back to work tomorrow you know![]()

All of it was $60.
Here's the deal. He buys the computers that need repaired. For example, the laptop I just got my brother a Sony VAIO P4 2.8 had a cracked screen and wouldn't boot to windows. At least that's what the service tag said on it. So my friend bought it for $20...they were just going to throw it out. He bought another VAIO that didn't work, switched the screens and DVD drive, the computer boots and runs like a champ, been running perfect for over 6 months now.
The HP laptop that I use just had a bad HD, replace it, loaded windows and waa-la, good PC.
That's where he gets this stuff. The 2.66 Ghz processor I have is out of a laptop PC. As long as the processor is not a mobile processor they are interchangable with desktop PCs. Hell, I ran for years on a 2.2 AMD out of a laptop.
The HDs are either in tradeins or smaller than they put in their new PCs and are surplus inventory. They use to have a store where they sold parts to the public but they closed that and ever since then they just sell to employees.
It's really amazing the things he gets and the price he pays for them. Remember back in the day when the 100 GB Zip disks were popular, he bought 3 of them for $1.00. You know what was wrong with them? The little door tit had come out of its hole and the door had come off. He just put the tit back in and there you go, new computer part.
The only things he can't really get super discounted is RAM. He got me 2 - 512 sticks of PC2700 for $30 each I think. It's sad, I don't even know what typical price is for RAM or anything else for that matter. It's been so long since I bought anything over the counter.
Life...it's not about "what" you know...it's "WHO" you know.
It's a give give relationship though, I hook him up with hunting supplies, guns, bows, places to hunt, etc. -
Locked, loaded and surfing in my new P4. Install done, back to whorin desktop style
