Hi all,
Don't really know where to post this question so I'll post it here. I recently bought a box set dvd. read in some reviews that many of these dvd boxset have defects. and busy as I am, it will take me a long time to watch all 9 dvds. I've found out by watching the first dvd in this boxset has a defect. just 2-3 seconds freeze in the same exact place and the scene would jump sometimes 2 secs later sometimes even 30 secs later. my question is: is there some sort of software where i'll be able to scan the dvd and find out whether the dvd has any sort of defect? preferrebly this software would not take as long to scan the dvd than if I would watch the movie. I guess what I'm looking for is something like virus scan which instead of scanning viruses, it scans errors in the dvd. I've tried dvdinfopro already but somehow the programme wouldn't recognise the error. Any comment, opinions, or advises will be hightly appreciated.
Thanks,
Raist

Run the transfer rate test with Nero CD Speed (free). If there are severe spikes in the test, you may experience problems with playback.

Yes, it should work on a 'pressed' disc as well. Let us know if the test shows bad spikes or not. You could also run the scandisc test on the disc using CD Speed and it will tell you of any unreadable or difficult to read spots on the disc.

I think best way to check DVD integrity is check "checksum" of the files.
A good program to do this, is: "Advanced CheckSum Verifier" on www.irnis.net, is also very slow, but if the software can read 100% of the disk, and do some calculation whitout errors, is because the disk probably is good. -
HI all!
Thanks for all your reply. Tried the nero speed, unfortunately it didn't work (no spikes at all). I tried to scan the dvd but the software did not recognise any error which is strange. I attached the result form this scan here. I haven't tried checksum though, will try it tonight. see if it works. Could it be that it's the fault of the player? the movie freezes at the same exact spot, but sometimes it doesn't jump at all (freeze for 2 sec and the continuing the movie again) sometimes it jumps as far as 30 secs. anyway, I'll try checksum but I would be grateful for any other opinions!
Cheers -
It sounds like it could be an issue with the actual video data put on the disc, not the physical disc. It really sounds as if your disc is not at fault, physically. Maybe there is a huge change in bitrate at that spot on the DVD and your player cannot handle it properly... Have you played the disc at that spot on your computer's DVD player(s)??? This really sounds like a combination of a difficult disc (not physically) and/or a picky DVD player at this point. Let us know if your problems exist playing back on your computer. I'd contact whoever produced the disc if you still have problems on your computer.

If you have a bad media, checksum software see errors in several .VOB files, and DVD drive refuse to read the .VOB files (very slow to read) but if you have a good media the software dont find any errors (or sometimes one 1 bit strange) and read process is very fast.
